Tonight's best bet | March 21, 2006
After tonight, one of my favorite shows will be done for the season. And, no, I'm not talking about the recently canceled Joey, even though I did stick with it until the end and will watch when/if they burn off the remaining episodes.
No, I'm talking about The Shield, of course. After five strong seasons, it almost feels wrong to say this, but I think this season has been the best by far. Forest Whitaker is perfectly creepy, and for the first time in the history of the series, I am really and truly rooting for Vic. (I know most people always root for him, but until Kavanaugh came in and one-upped Vic's egotism, I kind of always hoped he would get caught for all of his sins.) Mostly, though, I'll be rooting for Lem. To have to watch the Strike Team's "nice guy" take the fall for the rest of the gang, when he is the one who always has questioned the bad things they've done is almost too much. He doesn't deserve to be punished for the rest of the team's wrongdoings. But, then again, I don't want him to team with Kavanaugh to take them down either.
And in an even more compelling story line, Claudette FINALLY got the promotion she deserves, but her relationship with Dutch (my favorite relationship on the show) could be in jeopardy. We'll have to see about that.
Will we find out the father of Danny's baby? And what exactly is Kavanaug doing with Corrine? I think he has something much crueler in mind than what Vic did with his wife. I am afraid he might hurt her or even kill her -- to get Vic to do something illegal. But, of course, it will backfire, because Kavanaugh is the one who would go to prison for that -- and hopefully he would be the one put in with Antwone at Lompoc.
(Everything I say is speculation, by the way, as I do not read spoilers. So, your guess is as good as mine about all of this, and I would love to hear what everyone else thinks.)

Joey's gone? I guess it's better to learn from someone you know, rather than some TV executive.
He did have some good jokes. And I really liked Paulo and Miguel.

I guess by now you've seen tonight's episode of The Shield. If you haven't seen it, stop reading!
In response to this season's being the best... it definitely is tied with last season. Forest Whitaker's performance in the episode where he convinced Corrine to give up some info on Vic was one of the most heartbreaking performances in TV. Period. "Now... now you can cry." As a foil for Vic, he was perfect. Similar body shape, same bald dome, same determination... it just goes to show how great a force for good Vic might have been had he not been corrupted.
But on to tonight's episode. Wow. That last act tore me apart. There was never going to be an easy way out for Lem, and Shane was right. Even if Lem went to jail, he would eventually be squeezed for info on the Strike Team, and he'd hate himself forever. Shane gave Lem what was probably the easiest way out, but to see Lem go out like that... It was painful.
Next season can't come soon enough. This season, you had the breadth of the barn separating the hunter from the hunted. Next season, you will have the span of the card table separating them. In the meantime, I guess I'll have to hope The Wire comes back on soon.
