What is WRONG with people?! | August 27, 2006
So, exactly how old are the Emmy voters anyway? Because, while the Kiefer Sutherland award made me smile, how in the world could they choose Barry Manilow over Stephen Colbert?!
Have they never seen this?
I'm guessing not.
That's not even to mention choosing Julia Louis-Dreyfus over Lisa Kudrow (I DO like The New Adventures of Old Christine, by the way, but Kudrow's performance in The Comeback was too inspired to not get the award -- especially since the show was canceled).
Also, what about Arrested Development and, specifically, Will Arnett? Grrr.
Anyway, full Emmy results here, if you're interested.
(I do plan to talk about Survivor and its race issue, The Amazing Race and Dancing with the Stars, eventually. But for now, go read about those at Whine & Cheese.)

I heard on my local news that with Alan Alda's win for best supporting actor that West Wing now has the most Emmy's ever for one show. Can you confirm this? I think The Office was deserving for best comedy, but I still contend that Scrubs is and was the best comedy on television even in season 5. With Colbert's loss, it makes you wonder if he was really joking when he was ranting about losing to Barry Manilow! What was that special he did all about anyway? I like the Colbert clip you featured - hilarious! I had not seen that one. Good Day and Good Luck!

What is wrong with these people? Easy: They are Emmy voters, and their job is to get it wrong. They'll get to Colbert in three or four years--that's how long it will take them to meet enough people who understand what he's doing and who will tell them how to vote.

I try not to watch these shows. They're boring, in my opinion.

I'm sure Colbert was joking, but even Jon Stewart said, "Hey, you guys have made a gross error", about his recieving the award over Colbert.

Colbert is brilliant. Barry is, well, plastic.

Is Stephen Colbert the new Martin Scorcese? Always a nominee, never a winner...

..Oh how did 'My Name Is Earl' get best writing and directing and not get nominated for best series?

We just started watching both The Comeback and Old Christine this summer. While we like them both, The Comeback is very The Office/BBC version...it's uncomfortable to watch. And very awesome. Lisa Kudrow is awesome and NOT like Phoebe at all (which is a compliment to her acting ability). The best thing about Old Christine is her brother and the boyfriend she dumped.
The Emmy's mean nothing. That's what I've decided.

This is exactly why the Emmys will always be perceived as a second-rate awards show. They are so far removed from the zeitgeist that they're virtually (OK, completely) irrelevant.
Colbert makes me laugh. Manilow makes me sleep. Guess who I'm watching, and quoting. Emmy be damned.
