As mysteries pile up, 'Lost' risks getting just that | October 13, 2006
There is a fine line between a brilliant, nuanced mystery series that peels back its layers one by one until the big reveal (think "Veronica Mars," season 1) and one that does the opposite: continues adding layers until viewers can barely discern what it is they're trying to solve (Fox's "Vanished").
"Lost," ABC's mega-hit now in its third season, has been walking that line since it began. Read the rest ...

You are 100 percent correct on "Lost." And, as you so astutely pointed out, with the flashback technique, you could go an entire season and actually wind up further from learning the truth -- whatever that might be -- than when the season began. Aarrgghh.

DeAnn,
Thanks so much for your insightful article about Lost. I think you are absolutely right, and I too and feeling the same dissonance. I started watching and enjoyed Lost because of its mysteries and the intrigue in figuring out the enigma. Now it just seems that there is no overall ooherence to the story. It's frustrating, and I almost didn't watch this season after the end of last season. And this season it seems like they just keep on adding more questions such that I don't know what the questions or possible answers are anymore.
You said "Given the difficult goings, and the possibility of immense frustration if the end resolution isn't satisfactory -- and, really, with all of the hype and the "extended experiences" and the online guessing games, how can it ever live up? -- fans might be smarter to tune out now, and wait. Wait until the series is over, observe how those who kept watching the series react to the big ending, and decide whether to finish it out on DVD."
This is why I stopped working at the online puzzles/story, and why I am contemplating quitting lost all together. If only I was smart enough...
