On with the show... | October 23, 2006
I'm not even going to go into how tired I am of The Office and its very horrible idea to steer so far away from Ricky Gervais' brilliant U.K. version. No, I won't go there. Too many people get angry when you say the U.S. office isn't as good as the original.
But I will talk about a few bits of recent news that, if I were a better TV Goddess, I would have addressed last week:
First, there has been much controversy and infighting at Grey's Anatomy that ended with T.R. Knight coming out to People magazine. Boo to the fighting -- especially if the slurs really were said. And good for Knight for coming out. However, producers better keep his character straight. They are breaking some ground here, and it would be nice for them to keep it that way.
Second, what about NBC's decision to do away with scripted programming in the 8 p.m. hour? Is that the dumbest television decision since Happy Hour got the greenlight? It's certainly dumb to make such a blanket decision about seven hours of programming. Matt Roush and Tim Goodman put it much more eloquently than I do (in other words, they go beyond saying NBC chief Jeff Zucker is a big dummy-head), though, so go read their takes here: Roush and Goodman.
Last, several new shows have gotten full-season pickups. None of the latest announcements are all that exciting to me, though. What show would you most like to see picked up? Or canceled?

I like The US Office, but for very different reasons than why I liked the UK Office so much. For one, I relate to the US version since the pop culture references make more sense to me (the Survivor episode comes to mind). Besides, for it to be a 22 episode per season type of show, they HAD to change the format somewhat. The one thing that irks me is that some scenes don't make sense where they still have the "everything is being filmed" thing going on.
I am glad to see Shark got a pickup, although I was surprised. Yes, it's not that great of a show and is fairly predictable, but it is a guilty pleasure for me and James Wood is pure joy to watch with his over-the-top character that he plays so well. Besides, I don't have many crime procedurals in my DVR lineup other than CSI: Original Recipe, so Shark fits in quite nicely.
I am still shocked that Jericho got a full season, yet Smith got canceled. Sigh.

Well I'm glad that Justice is getting a second chance... or so it seems. I dropped Jericho and Men In Trees from my lineup and now Smith is gone, so that helps. What I really wish is that they would move Ugly Betty to a better timeslot for me because it's competing against Survivor and The Office and that means I have to watch it online.

We love the BBC Office at my house. We started watching it by accident in it's first season and have been fans ever since. We bought copies and shared it with our offices until our copies were worn out.
That being said, I like the American version also. But I have to think about them as completly different shows. Although they started the exact same..they aren't the same at all anymore.
I want VM to stick around. That's the only show I love that might not.

Ignorance is bliss! Since I have not seen the UK version, I can enjoy the US version as a show that is quite simply funny in and of itself.
As for the full season pickups - I was quite happy - Ugly Betty, Jericho, Shark, and Heroes are all among my favorites. Now if only Studio 60 and Six Degrees would get the pickup - though I am not too hopeful about the prospects.
