Twists and turns | October 17, 2006
OK, so what did y'all think of that new surprise at the end of the first nonelimination leg of the season on The Amazing Race? I think it's pretty harsh BUT more fair than anything they've done before. Because, in all fairness to teams finishing behind you, you would be eliminated. So ... that kind of a penalty is perfect, I think. And if they can't overcome it, well ... I'll be sad because I like them and would love to see them win the money. But I'll also kind of think it's deserved. I sort of hate when teams finish last at more than one nonelimination leg and then win the race (i.e. Zach and Flo).
Speaking of Zach and Flo, I have been watching the repeats of past seasons on GSN, and I have to say that this show really does hold up over time. The fourth season just started on GSN if you want to tune in (or record it, since it's on every night at midnight or 3 a.m., depending on where you live). Watching the old ones at the same time I'm watching the current season has really reminded me how similar the current season is to those early few.
One more TAR-related item before I move on: What is this? How does it work? And I want one!
Also, I do plan to post soon with an update about my fall viewing (what's still in my TiVo, what I love most, etc.). I know you're all really looking forward to that. Hopefully you can wait just a little bit longer. I know it will be hard, but try to contain yourselves.

I was thinking Phil was going to say the team would have to win the next stage or be eliminated, so I think the new twist is very fair.

I still wish they would post the actual times online after the episode has aired. I know that they have to edit the show to increase the tension, but I'd like to see how far behind some of the teams are at the mid checkpoints, not just at the pit stop.
And I agree with Jay - I like the new rules for finishing last. I think they determined that teams who finished last were just able to beg and borrow from the other teams, so why bother penalizing them in that way. Although I will miss seeing the people wearing every article of clothing they brought with them at the same time.

That posting the times idea is pretty good. The Amazing Race does hold up well. One change that cracks me up is that the representative of the country who is waiting at the pit stop has been given fewer lines. Now they only say "welcome to ________" instead of telling the contestants what number they are. Watching the different seasons, it's fun to see how the challenges have evolved. Some seasons too easy, other seasons rewardingly difficult. My favorite challenes were those from a few seasons ago when the challenges were actually helpful (kind of) to the people of the different countries. I think a lot of people thought those were too easy, but I thought they showed a respect for the different cultures that the show does not always have.

i'm happy with the new nonelimination leg, but incredibly disappointed that the teams with the worst attitudes are in the top three spots. down with the barbies!!
