Heroes delivers | March 01, 2007
There's something about that latest episode of Heroes that just ... resonated in a way that the previous episodes hadn't. It was as if all of this build-up and drama and mystery finally opened up to reveal something else: emotion. Because for all of its amazing action and story lines and details and characters, this was the first time the show played on any real emotions. And for me? That was the final hook. I'm in now, people. For good.
Finding out that Horn-Rimmed Glasses was a good guy (even though we don't know what kind of mysterious eeeeeevil he has been doing with the heroes all of these years) right before we had to watch him get shot and then have his mind erased was pretty frakking insane. And Hayden Panettiere (Claire) played that part with real, raw emotions that made so much sense, even after all of the anger she'd been feeling toward her dad. She realized at virtually the same time we, as an audience, did that he was making a real sacrifice -- that everything he'd been doing was a sacrifice -- for her. He might have done some things wrong, but he really was (mostly) acting with the safety of Claire in mind. And that's noble.
And watching Claire walk out of the burning house all charred and slowly morph back into healthy Claire? Really phenomenal television, as far as I'm concerned.
I know there have been some complaints that this show isn't all it's hyped to be, but this episode really proves that it is, and that it will live up to the promise.
Questions remain, though, obviously (but, unlike on Lost, we will be getting answers this season), such as:
1. What the HECK is up with Simone in the preview? I thought "Someone dies. Someone flies." They better not bring that person back from the dead, or their teasers will never mean anything. Oh, wait, they already don't... since the world isn't exactly saved yet even though the cheerleader was saved, right?
2. Who is Eric Roberts? And how is Hiro's dad involved? He's clearly not Linderman judging from next week's trailer, so ... who?
3. Who is the person whose opinion supersedes HRG's concering Claire, where the Haitian was concerned? We know it's not Eric Roberts or George Takei, because they didn't know about Claire's powers until this episode. Maybe it's Nathan and he knows more than he's letting on? Or Peter?
4. What is the Invisible Man's role in it all. Who was the hero he was protecting?
5. What are they trying to tell us with the latest catch phrase, "No one is safe"? Anything?

I'm afraid that the Someone dies, someone flies teaser is going to be Parkman, since Simone is not dead, or undead, or whatever. I hope not, because I really like him.
Anyway, I just wanted to mention how adorable it was when baby Claire, as soon as she was put in HRGs arms, starts rubbing his chin.

I think its Nathan that supersedes the other two's protection, but who knows.
but I agree with you I think it was an amazing episode because it tied up SOME loose ends but still made you think.

Complaints about the show? Really? I haven't seen any. What are they?
My thoughts on your questions:
1. I guess Simone is 'one of them,' too. Which is unfortunate- feels like a little too much of a closed universe. Everyone we know is 'one of them,' it feels like. I'm annoyed at the "someone dies" as well, because they took it away in an episode. Pretty lame.
2. Roberts seemed to be just another agent, but one that clearly outranked (the hell out of) Mr. Bennet.
3. I thought it was obvious- Linderman. But obvious in this show tends to mean it's not the case. Which takes me to another point- I never thought Mr. Bennet was a bad guy. It was too obvious.
4. I didn't really stop to think about who he'd have been protecting. How many of them are actually old enough to have been around back then, though? Makes me think Nathan. He's the old man of the bunch.
5. "Someone dies."
Not at all interested in watching a preview clip. In fact, I'm pissed that I saw the previews at the end of last week. They showed too much by letting us see Simone. Would have been much better to save that as a surprise.

I haven't watched this week's episode yet...so I couldn't read your post!!
But I was wondering what you are thinking about Studio 60. I LOVE the show. LOVE IT. But I heard it might get cancelled.
Thoughts??
