Oscars aftermath: Busey and Whoopi and Brad Renfro. Oh my! | February 26, 2008
For the first time in the history of DeAnn, I not only didn't have an Oscar party, but I didn't even watch the Oscars in their entirety. It's not actually my fault, as I was out of town and I did set up my TiVo to record but it somehow missed the first hour and a half. But, just because I missed part of the show doesn't mean I'm not all caught up. Quite the contrary.
Obviously, the craziest of all crazies at the Oscars was Gary Busey, who accosted Ryan Seacrest (who handled it gamely, giving me at least a little respect for the guy) on the red carpet. Take a look:
Seriously ... who let Gary Busey into the Oscars?! Poor, poor Jennifer Garner. Where is Ben Affleck when you need him? At least Laura Linney got poor Jen out of there before any more damage (or neck kissing) could be done.
Then there was poor Whoopi Goldberg, four-time Oscar host (and first/only female host and first black host) but left out of the hosts montage. At least the other ladies on "The View" (yes, even Elisabeth Hasselbeck was extremely nice) made her feel better about it. Watch the clip from "The View" here.
Finally, one part of the Oscars I did see was the "In Memoriam" montage, and I found myself wondering where Brad Renfro was/why he was omitted. Apparently, I wasn't the only one. And that quote from the Oscar spokesperson?
In any given year, we are not able to include everyone who has past away, and because we very much want to include people who worked in all aspects of filmmaking, not just actors and actresses, this means that sometimes well-known individuals are not included.
Just seems like they're trying to cover their tracks after having forgotten to include him. I mean, do we really expect the oldsters in the Academy to recognize a kid who's been in films with Ian McKellen, Brad Pitt, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, Kevin Bacon, Scarlett Johansson, Steve Buscemi, and ... uh ... Frankie Muniz? Apparently not. But, really, shame on the Academy for that.
(Watch this space in the coming days/weeks/eternities as I blog about Big Brother more often than anyone — except me, obviously — would ever dare.)

TV critics announce their nominees | June 06, 2007
So, the TCA nominations have been announced. I hope Friday Night Lights wins everything it's nominated for. That's really my only hope.
Keep reading for the list of nominees.

Follow-ups: Sanjaya, Rosie, Friday Night Lights (sort of) | May 29, 2007
So, Sanjaya is not, in fact, Bill Vendall; Rosie left The View and TV Guide's Dream Emmy Ballot included some of my favorites. Read all about it.

Peabody Awards mingle strange company | April 04, 2007
I love the Peabody Awards, if only because it feels so odd to see 60 Minutes: The Duke Rape Case alongside When the Levees Broke and The Office. But still, they always tend to make me happy because they don't have to select just ONE out of five nominees or whatever. It's nice to just select what's deserving and leave it at that. Here's the complete list.
I'm happiest about Friday Night Lights because it's SO my favorite show right now (OK, I know I said The Amazing Race was my favorite show yesterday, but I am allowed to change my mind daily). But you all know I'm also thrilled about This American Life because Habeas Schmabeas was a damn good episode.
If you don't want to follow that link, though, the complete list is also after the jump.

Oscars -- my quick (and late) take | February 27, 2007
My quick take on the Oscars:
Best dressed
For me it's a tie between these two lovely ladies:

Worst dressed
Though her face was lovely, I hated this. Why the bow, Anne? WHY?!

I'll let the the fug blog ladies handle the rest of the worst dressed. They're doing such a good job already! As usual. (They also blogged the Oscars, which was great!
And I don't hate Eddie Murphy even though he left early. I think he's anti-social bordering on social anxiety, not pissed. But that might be my deep, abiding love for Bowfinger talking.
Most boring/awkward: Al Gore
Funniest: Jack Black/Will Ferrel/John C. Reilly OR Greg Kinnear/Steve Carrel
Cutest: Jaden Smith and Abigail Breslen
Biggest surprise: "The Lives of Others" for foreign language film, which was a highlight for me because I LOVE that movie. I also loved that the 6-foot-9 director talked about Arnold Schwarzenegger in his speech. How unlikely and hilarious.
Overall, it was a pretty boring awards show. Thank goodness I have a party to make it more fun!
What's YOUR take? (I care, really I do. Despite the boring awards show, I love all of the opinions in the aftermath.)

I amaze even myself | February 20, 2007
So, remember when I had a list of movies a mile long to see before the Oscars in order to see everything nominated for picture, director, all acting awards and the screenplay awards? Well, I've come a long way since then. I have three movies left to see this week (in addition to the short films, which I'll be seeing too!) in order to have seen all of those categories.
Here's a full breakdown (including who I'd vote for if I were a member of the Academy -- NOT a reflection of who I think will actually win):

Different awards ... same people | January 29, 2007
For the first time in probably 200 years, I didn't watch the Golden Globes OR the Screen Actors Guild Awards (which were last night, if you missed them). They are pretty same-old, same-old anyway (everyone gets the same award). But I'm happy to have missed them all, because I get sick of hearing the same speeches over and over. This time, I'll actually get to hear something new at Oscar time.
That doesn't mean I don't care who won last night. I do. You can find the results at the SAG Awards home page. But I'm nice enough to not make you follow links to other sites (stay HERE, please!) so you can read them below if you're interested (my list copied from TVGuide.com).
Biggest surprise? Little Miss Sunshine winning best ensemble. Is this a predictor of a HUGE upset at Oscar time?

Oscar mania | January 23, 2007
I'm pretty happy with the results of the Oscar nominations. I'm especially happy about Ryan Gosling's nod, even though I know that Forest Whitaker will win that category. I'm also happy about Mark Wahlberg's nomination, but annoyed that Leonardo DiCaprio got one for Blood Diamond instead of The Departed. Wha ...? Also, Babel for best picture? Ridiculous!
In order to see all of the movies in major categories (picture, acting, directing, screenwriting) in time for my annual Oscar party, here's what I'll need to watch in the coming weeks:
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Devil Wears Prada
Dreamgirls
Letters from Iwo Jima
Little Children
Little Miss Sunshine
Notes on a Scandal
Pan's Labyrinth
The Pursuit of Happyness
United 93
Venus
Volver
Do you think I'm daunted by this list? Well ... I'm not. I might even try to see stuff in other categories. If you didn't follow the link above, the full list of nominees is below.

SAG Awards | January 05, 2007
OK, so the SAG Award nominations were announced yesterday, and I posted instead about The O.C. I know my news judgment rocks.
Anyway, the nominations did not make me unhappy. I was ecstatic, for instance, about Michael C. Hall's nomination for Dexter, America Ferrera's for Ugly Betty, and Jason Lee's and Jaime Pressly's for My Name is Earl.
I have to admit I was the most happy about Ryan Gosling's nomation for Half Nelson, though. Mainly because it was my favorite performance in a movie this year, and those Golden Globe people apparently forgot to watch it.
What did you think? Complete list follows.

What is WRONG with people?! | August 27, 2006
So, exactly how old are the Emmy voters anyway? Because, while the Kiefer Sutherland award made me smile, how in the world could they choose Barry Manilow over Stephen Colbert?!
Have they never seen this?
I'm guessing not.
That's not even to mention choosing Julia Louis-Dreyfus over Lisa Kudrow (I DO like The New Adventures of Old Christine, by the way, but Kudrow's performance in The Comeback was too inspired to not get the award -- especially since the show was canceled).
Also, what about Arrested Development and, specifically, Will Arnett? Grrr.
Anyway, full Emmy results here, if you're interested.
(I do plan to talk about Survivor and its race issue, The Amazing Race and Dancing with the Stars, eventually. But for now, go read about those at Whine & Cheese.)

Anticlimactic Emmy nominations | July 06, 2006
Even with the much-publicized changes to the Emmy nominating process, they still let me down, for the most part.
Except for that one category in which they nominated Will Arnett as GOB in Arrested Development (come on ... did anyone expect that), and the fact that both it and Scrubs were nominated as comedy series. Oh, and that little thing about Stephen Colbert being nominated (sorry, Jon... but he was more deserving than you!)
You can read the full list here. Or watch the major nominations be announced here. (It's worth it just to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus get nominated while she's announcing the nominees. Very cool.) You know I'll discuss them further later -- maybe even later today. In the meantime, you can read what Michael Ausiello had to say about it all.

Emmy buzz | June 01, 2006
The trades have been writing Emmy previews, all about how the changes to the way the voting will work this year will shake things up. (Here's Variety's version.) All I can say is, let's hope so, because the Emmys have been so boring for so long (Ellen notwithstanding) that I have considered a boycott.
My greatest Emmy hopes this year are for the Scrubs cast members to get the recognition they have deserved for so long, especially John C. McGinley and Donald Faison. I also would like to see Treat Williams nominated for Everwood (fat chance, I know) or anyone from the shows I love on the WB and/or UPN, actually. I'll be rooting especially for Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars. But, I have to say that the show I think will be even more overlooked than the former CW netlets is Battlestar Galactica. It is not about being sci-fi. This is fantastic drama, fantastic acting, etc. I'm rooting for that or The Shield for best drama.
What/who are you hoping gets a nomination?

Peabody Schmeabody | April 11, 2006
So, I forgot to talk about the Peabody Awards. Sorry. I think they made some good choices, though (Battlestar Galactica and The Shield in particular).
But Stephen Colbert was right about his show deserving one. If you saw his interview with Oregon Rep. Darlene Hooley, you couldn't possibly disagree. It was hysterical and "hard-hitting." Ha! I love that man. (Which reminds me, I tried to get tickets to The Colbert Report for when I visit the East Coast next month, but you can't get them online. I did, however, score two tickets to The Daily Show. Who wants to go with me?)

Are those POCKETS?! | March 08, 2006
To answer Darcy's question, yes, those are pockets in Maggie's dress. Dresses with pockets are apparently the new thing. Just ask Sandra Bullock:

Or supporting actress nominee Amy Adams:

My (new) favorite couple? | March 06, 2006
This photo of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard is the most genuinely adorable red carpet photo I've seen so far:

I dare you to find something more adorable. I also dare to find you another couple with double A's in BOTH of their last names. (Yes, I pay attention to weird details.)
They are much more adorable, for instance, than the awkward- and uncomfortable-looking Michelle Williams and Heath Ledger (and, if you're wondering, no, I do NOT like Michelle Williams' mustard-and-ketchup look).

Google + Me = LOVE! | March 06, 2006
So, yes, I'm in love with Google. All because my friend Jay alerted me to this over at Gawker.
Apparently Google and I both feel that Crash would be more accurately named Trash. Ha!
As of right now, the search still is turning up the same results. It's hysterical! And I am 5.

Blah, blah, blah | March 06, 2006
Reasons no one watches the Oscars anymore:
1. Too many pointless montages. Film noir? Epic films? Important historical conflicts? Wha...? (I did love that Jon Stewart said "We are out of film clips." Ha! And, so true.)
2. The audience is too stodgy or too stupid to laugh at the hilarity that is Jon Stewart.
3. Everything is completely predictable. In my Oscar pool, I tried to shake things up, in hopes there would be a few surprises. There was one....
4. Best Picture almost always disappoints. Crash? Really? I think I might have missed the message of that movie? Was it something about racism?
If you care, though, and don't already know, the results are here. I got 13 of the 24 categories correct. My friend Jill, who won the pool at my party, got 21!!
Also, Salma Hayek and Uma Thurman get my votes for looking the best. But there was much prettiness. Keira Knightley, for example.
Helena Bonham-Carter, however, did not look good (What was that hair about?). And I didn't like Amy Adams' dress. Also, was Charlize Theron wearing a dress or some sort of dominatrix outfit left over from her Aeon Flux wardrobe? I couldn't tell. But Jennifer Lopez wins the prize for looking worst and also stupidest.

Oscar mania | January 31, 2006
I know they're not TV awards, but they are on TV, so they are important to me (And for those who don't know, I also love movies!). Anyway, Oscar nominations were announced today. Thus begins the time of year when I get busy trying to see all of the nominated films I haven't seen. And it's also the time of year when I start pouting because of what was left out and what I think should not have been nominated. In fact, I'll go ahead and start my rant right now, so that you all can share in my pain. Here are all of the nominees and my take, in bold:

Funniest man in America? | January 27, 2006
For those of you who missed the Golden Globes and the wonderful acceptance speech by Steve Carell (NOT Steve Carrell, thankyouverymuch), Whine & Cheese rewatched it in a repeat on Bravo and transcribed the whole darn thing right here, since there didn't appear to be a transcript anywhere else online. Thanks to him for doing that, because that hilarity should be recorded in history. Or the blogosphere. (Aren't they the same thing by now?)
By the way, the speech gets my vote as one of the greatest speeches in recent awards show history, right up there with Matt Damon & Ben Affleck's Oscar speech and Larry David's Golden Globe win.
(Which brings up the question: WHY can't we at least buy transcripts/tapes of past awards shows? Some of us would be crazy enough to actually want them, and it seems like an easy way for the various academies to earn some cash. Not that they need it, but that's never stopped anyone before.)

Golden Globes: Quick Take | January 17, 2006
Results I am HAPPY about:
Movies
* Everything for Brokeback Mountain: screenplay, director, original song (if you haven't heard the song or the score, you really should; it's an amazing soundtrack) and picture, drama
* Everything for Walk the Line: actor, actress and picture, musical or comedy (although I would also have been happy if The Squid and the Whale won in any of these categories)
* Actor and actress, motion picture, drama: Hoffman (Capote) and Huffman (Transamerica), respectively
* Supporting actor and actress: George Clooney (Syriana) and Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener)
TV
* Actor, musical or comedy: Steve Carell for The Office (I also would have been happy with Jason Lee or Zach Braff, except then I wouldn't have gotten to enjoy Carell's speech)
* Actress, musical or comedy: Mary-Louise Parker!! for Weeds
What made me UNHAPPY:
* Lost and Desperate Housewives winning drama and comedy (I know most people will hate me for not wanting Lost to win, so all I can say to keep you from hating me is that I was more unhappy about Desperate Housewives)
* TV supporting actress Sandra Oh (her speech was cute, but I wanted Elizabeth Perkins to win for Weeds)
* Original score for a motion picture for Memoirs of a Geisha (did I mention the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack?)
All other categories I either didn't know enough about or have strong enough feelings about to get either mad or happy.

I guess it could | January 05, 2006
The Academy confirmed Jon Stewart as Oscar host this morning, saying:
Beverly Hills, CA — Jon Stewart has been set to host the 78th Academy Awards telecast, producer Gil Cates announced today. This will be Stewart's first stint as Oscar host."My wife and I watch him every night," Cates said. "Jon is the epitome of a perfect host — smart, engaging, irreverent and funny."
In other award news, the Screen Actors Guild announced its nominees today. No big TV surprises other than all of the love for "Boston Legal." (I'm also more than a little disappointed that Cillian Murphy wasn't nominated for "Breakfast on Pluto," but I can't say I'm surprised.

More nominations | December 17, 2005
So, yes, awards season clearly is coming because I almost didn't notice the Golden Globe nominatons.
Really, now, are they kidding with no nominations for "Arrested Development" and with all of the nods for "Desperate Housewives." I thought everyone was over that show already. Was I misinformed?
Anyway, the TV nominees, minus the miniseries stuff because I haven't seen enough of any of it (with my comments) are:

Writers love writers | December 16, 2005
The Writers Guild announced its nominees for TV writing awards yesterday. While I was happy to see "Kitchen Confidential" get a nod, and happy that "My Name is Earl" was so honored with three (as was "The Office"), I was a little disappointed that "Arrested Development" only got one nomination. I'm quite certain there was at least one episode that could have qualified in the episodic category.
(By the way, what show do you think will win the animation category? Any guesses?)
