Tune in | November 24, 2006
I wanted to let everyone know that I'm not writing a regular column anymore, but I'm still writing "tune in," which is where I recommend the five shows to watch for the coming week.
It's here, if you scroll to the bottom. It starts with The Amazing Race.
(I know it still has my byline on the main story, but I promise I didn't write that.)
I'll still link to my tune in each Friday under the "Column" category, though, so you can know what I want you shouldn't miss.

'Concept' shows lose sight of sharp hooks | November 17, 2006
"Day Break" is the latest in what's becoming a long line of "concept" programming. It started with "24," which gave us a new idea that worked in the format of a TV series and became a huge success.
That was followed, though, by less successful concepts, from "Watching Ellie" (real-time comedy -- Julia Louis-Dreyfus apparently was still under the "Seinfeld" curse) to last season's "Reunion" (solving a 20-year-old crime one episode -- and year -- at a time; problem is the cancellation left viewers hanging and wary of serial mysteries).
The problem with concept programs, whether comedy or drama, is that most of the concepts can last only a short time before they either force the series to an abrupt end or fade to the background, leaving just another TV show. Read the rest ...

Football series shouldn't get sacked | November 10, 2006
Several new shows have emerged as deserving hits -- "Heroes," "Ugly Betty," even the almost-good "Brothers & Sisters." But the real story this TV season is how, just as in so many other seasons, one of the best shows is struggling to survive. That show is "Friday Night Lights" (7 p.m. Tuesdays, NBC). Sweeping away new season's weakest | November 03, 2006
As we enter sweeps month, let's look back at this season's new offerings. There have been some true breakout hits ("Ugly Betty," "Heroes") and some even bigger failures ("Smith," "Kidnapped") and everything in between.
Of the new shows that remain on the schedule, some are still at risk of cancellation. Here's the major networks' outlook: Read the rest ...

Viewing habits evolve with online offerings | October 27, 2006
In this world of video iPods and 24-inch computer monitors, TV isn’t just for the TV set anymore.
Networks and other Web sites have made giant strides recently, putting more and more episodes of TV series online, mostly to purchase but some for free streaming or download.
With access to programming online, viewers can give their tired VCRs and DVDs a rest and still catch more than one show scheduled in the same hour. Read the rest ...

'Race' the royalty of reality programs | October 20, 2006
"The Amazing Race" is so much better than almost everything else in its genre -- yes, reality TV is its own genre -- that even during an off season, it seems awfully good. Unless, of course, you're counting that "Family Edition," which was pretty horrible by any standards.
Season 10, which is less than halfway finished, is so good that it sheds a harsh light on the mediocre seasons that preceded it. Read the rest ...

As mysteries pile up, 'Lost' risks getting just that | October 13, 2006
There is a fine line between a brilliant, nuanced mystery series that peels back its layers one by one until the big reveal (think "Veronica Mars," season 1) and one that does the opposite: continues adding layers until viewers can barely discern what it is they're trying to solve (Fox's "Vanished").
"Lost," ABC's mega-hit now in its third season, has been walking that line since it began. Read the rest ...

'Betty' turns viewers head with brains | October 06, 2006
Who would have thought this season's breakout hit would be based on a telenovela called "Betty la Fea" and star an unattractive girl making it in the world of fashion? Probably no one. Throw in a title change (the series used the literal translation, "Betty the Ugly" on early press materials), and the smart money was on the failure of ABC's "Ugly Betty."
But this is an all-too-rare instance when critics and audiences are in perfect harmony, and the show is as good as they say -- and it proves a few things: Read the rest ...

"Veronica Mars" is back!
It returns Tuesday in that coveted post-"Gilmore Girls" slot on the CW. But it also appears to be back on track in terms of content and story arcs.
After that disappointing second-season finale -- to end what was building to and what could have been quite an exceptional season -- it's nice to see Veronica and the gang in fine form again as they begin college. Read the rest ...

'Girls' goes on -- and it's still good | September 22, 2006
It's rare that the creator-executive producer of a show is as important to fans' reactions to the program as the star(s) of a show. There are instances, though, where a show would not be the same without the showrunners.
Take "Sports Night," Aaron Sorkin's brilliant brainchild. Or J.J. Abrams' "Alias." Anything by Joss Whedon ("Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Angel" and "Firefly"). Most ardent TV fans would go ahead and add "Gilmore Girls" and Amy Sherman Palladino to that list. But they'd be wrong. Read the rest ...

Give 'Your Mother' a welcome-back hug | September 15, 2006
(I know I've been bad about posting this week, but I am putting together my entire TiVo lineup for new fall shows, which I'll post over the weekend. So, check back if you want to know what I'm watching -- at least to start out -- this fall! In the meantime, you can read my column if you're so inclined.)
Despite series-altering cliffhangers in last spring's finale that might doom a lesser comedy, returning hit How I Met Your Mother appears ready to avoid falling into a sophomore slump. If anything, the comedy seems reinvigorated -- smarter, sassier -- for this second go-round.
"How I Met Your Mother" returns at 7:30 p.m. Monday as part of CBS' best night of comedy in years: Read the rest ...

Back in action | September 08, 2006
There were a few heartbreaking cancellations last television season — think “Everwood” and “Arrested Development” — but a surprising number of shows returned to live another day. Even shows on the brink of cancellation throughout the season — including “Veronica Mars” and “7th Heaven,” which was officially canceled until the finale numbers led the CW to change its mind — were given another chance to show what they’re made of this fall.
But just because a show has been renewed doesn’t mean it’s worth watching. Here’s a guide to which returning shows are worth tuning in to. Read the rest ...

The new fall lineup is a TV fan's nightmare -- and not because there is nothing worth watching. This season, there are so many high-quality new shows that viewers might find themselves torn between two or three in one time slot.
The only advice a TV writer can give is: Invest in as many DVRs and VCRs as possible. And keep your fingers crossed that the shows you choose aren't the ones to get canceled.

Suspense doesn't disappear with credits | August 18, 2006
Most crime-solving series operate on the principle that people want self-contained story lines in each episode. Of course, there are also ongoing arcs -- often relationship drama -- but those stories play second fiddle to the crime of the week, almost always solved by episode's end.

Small victories make inroads into Emmys | July 14, 2006
With this season's much-anticipated and publicized changes to the Emmy nominating process, it was a little disappointing to see so many of the same tired nominees last week, when the lucky few (hundred) were announced.
The new process -- in which regular nominations whittled the field to 15 and then a smaller panel of voters chose the nominees after watching all of the pertinent episodes -- changed things some, but not in the ways that most fans and critics had hoped.
There were no major nominations for Battlestar Galactica, The Shield, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls or Everwood -- critical darlings that ardent fans and supporters had hoped might finally get the recognition they deserved.
Without harping on the worst omissions (Treat Williams, at least, for Everwood; Forest Whitaker for The Shield, Battlestar and Veronica Mars as best drama, Lauren Graham for Gilmore, any cast member for Scrubs, Neil Patrick Harris for How I Met Your Mother, Mary Louise Parker for Weeds) that were overshadowed by less-deserving long-timers from The West Wing and Will & Grace, Emmy viewers -- and hopefully voters -- should focus on the small victories. Comics, contenders are draws amid dregs | June 16, 2006
Why do networks insist on filling the airwaves with bad reality shows during the summer months? Is there a rule that says all good programming must wait until fall? The networks happily oblige with everything from the ridiculous "Tuesday Night Book Club" and the pathetic "How To Get the Guy" to talent searches "So You Think You Can Dance" and "America's Got Talent."
There have been enough shows searching for people with talent -- ranging from the truly good "Project Greenlight" to the horrendously awful WB spoof "Superstar USA"-- over the years that it's clear this country has been tapped out. There is, in fact, no more talent here. And if there is, it's getting too hard to find amid all of the garbage. So viewers should feel free to ignore this summer's talent search shows, with two exceptions: Last Comic Standing (now airing, Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC) and The Contender (premieres July 18 on ESPN). Some television viewers take the summer as a break from the tube -- a reprieve from couch duty, if you will. But there are others who simply cannot stand to be away from the TV for three months. Those viewers want to come home after work and find something worth watching.
For those allergic to channel surfing, the summer alternative is catching up on some of the best shows, thanks to the luxury of TV on DVD. Even, "Who cares about Lane and Zach's stupid wedding. It should be Luke and Lorelai!"

Fighting extinction during renewal selection | April 28, 2006

What many fans don't know is which shows are already safe and which of their favorites they should be campaigning for.
Fans of Fox's "24," "Bones," "American Idol" and "The Simpsons"; CBS' "How I Met Your Mother," "Without a Trace" and "The Amazing Race"; NBC's "My Name Is Earl" and "The Office" can rest easy. Those programs, along with many others, have been picked up for another season.

Queen finds her heart a hard subject to rule | April 21, 2006
There have been so many portrayals of Queen Elizabeth in movies and television that it's hard for viewers to recognize what is real, which story is most true. I like to think that it doesn't matter.
These are depictions of a monarch who lived hundreds of years ago. It's not very likely that someone will know how to act like her or get the minutiae of her day-to-day life exactly right.
What matters is that a story and an actor can capture her essence -- something about the queen that made her so legendary and so much more important to our popular culture than any other English monarch.
HBO's new miniseries "Elizabeth I" (Part 1 premieres at 7 p.m. Saturday and Part 2 at 7 p.m. Monday, with frequent repeats on HBO and HBO2), with Helen Mirren portraying the Virgin Queen, gets it right but with a new twist. Read the rest...

Family strife, local tie lift reality show | April 14, 2006
When you first hear the title "The Real Housewives of Orange County," you can't help but think it's going to be nothing but a soapy reality drama -- heavily edited to make it as steamy and "The O.C."-esque as possible.
But you wouldn't be completely right. Certainly, "The Real Housewives" (new episodes air at 9 p.m. Tuesdays on Bravo, with frequent repeats) proves that some stereotypes are true. Conflicted cop drama another brilliant export from BBC | January 27, 2006
Anyone who has watched BBC America's "Bodies" or "Teachers" knows what those viewers who tune in to "Conviction" at 9 p.m. Monday will discover: BBC television is more original, more engaging and more entertaining than most of what is produced on this side of the pond -- even when the concept is nearly identical.
"Bodies" is a more realistic portrayal of doctors than "E.R." These docs are intensely flawed: They don't always save the day, and they don't even always want to. "Teachers" didn't portray its young protagonist, Simon, and his group of teacher friends with typical TV character righteousness. Simon was still a child himself, without the nobility of David E. Kelly's former Fox drama "Boston Public," in which everyone -- except the villain vice principal -- is in it for the nobility. These BBC dramas offer no real heroes and no real villains. There are shades of gray, much as in life.
Which brings us to "Conviction" ... Read the rest...

That the network was willing to take risks on new and original comedies "My Name Is Earl" and "The Office" -- even if one of them is a remake -- shows that NBC is courageous enough to take on and promote an interesting concept.

Sometimes a television show takes viewers by surprise with its emotional impact, with the power it has to make them feel for its characters. Sometimes a show surprises simply by being what viewers didn't expect -- either by not living up to its potential or by far exceeding it.

CPR for your TV | December 30, 2005

NBC resolves to save its Thursday nights with a slew of comedy offerings.
ABC resolves to give John Stamos another shot on "Jake in Progress."
Fox resolves to reign reality TV with the return of national phenomenon "American Idol."
Well, perhaps not all resolutions should be kept.
Still, the best part about television in January is the midseason replacement, the little show that could, the program that didn't make the first cut but is given another chance, the underdog.
