Sex and the City movie review: Not as good as I'd hoped | May 29, 2008

Before I write up a post I'm planning about what you should be watching this summer (for now, set your DVRs for The Mole, which starts Monday), I wanted to let you know that I saw the Sex and the City movie, and I reviewed it. Go ahead and read my review and let me know what you think. I will say that I think people who didn't love the show might like it more than I did, because they will go in with lower expectations.
I'm interested in what everyone else thinks of it once they see it, too, especially if you were a fan of the series. So, come back and let me know if you loved it.

Photos of a parking lot, or stalking The Amazing Race | May 13, 2008
(I am a TAR spoiler phobe, but if you're more of one even than me, you might not want to read this. It doesn't give anything away, but tells you locations, etc.)
The things I do to track down more information about this obsession of mine baffles even me -- at least it did today.
Anyway, here are the photos I took with my cameraphone. I took three exactly like this one, but they really are all the same. Just a bunch of minivans and caution tape and signs saying "Tow Zone," "Lot Closed" and "Reserved Parking."

Next, this is an Xterra that had a sheet of paper on the dash that said "WRP," which I took to mean "World Race Productions," the production company of The Amazing Race.

Here is the "WRP" sign, or my attempt at taking a photo of it while the lady guarding the lot in the car next to it kept glaring and turning her car around to glare at me. I was too chicken to get too close. I think you can see there is a sheet of paper here, but probably not that it says "WRP." You're going to have to trust me on this.

Larger versions start here in my Flickr account.
Also, there's a full account of all of this from a colleague. She and I are big fans and worked to track this together.

The Amazing Race stalking | May 13, 2008
So, I am working on getting photos from my cameraphone into this blog, but in the meantime, you can read the forum post I wrote about my stalking experience today.
It's seeming that the show is definitely here, although I'm not sure why yet. But I want to stalk them and find Phil.

Is The Amazing Race in Portland?! | May 13, 2008
Willamette Week says so. That would mean: My favorite show ever, The Amazing Race, might be in my city. Right this very minute.
That also means, Phil Keoghan (that's him, right over there to the left), best reality show host ever, would be here.
I am so torn between my desire to find him and my desire to remain unspoiled on the outcome (because this might be the end, and I would not want to see who crossed the finish line for TAR 13.
So, tell me: What's a crazy, obsessed fan to do? I have two options:
I can keep hunting this down, by going to the underpants store mentioned in the story and asking about this leak. Looking into the parking blocked off in that area, since he said it's blocked off.
Or, I can CALM down and just watch past seasons again -- which I've been doing anyway. I'm on season 5 now. If you don't remember, it has all of the awesome that is Colin, including this:
and this:
So ... any advice on how I can stalk find them other than the options mentioned above? And, yes, you guessed right: I'm going with option No. 1.

My life in TV, movies, and more | May 07, 2008
Lately, since Big Brother ended (to return on July 13!), I've been trying to catch up on some TV (I watched three episodes of Gossip Girl last night and am now all caught up; see commentary below); watch some movies; watch lots of movie trailers; and work on wedding planning details. In addition to that, I have work and somewhat of a life, which explains the lack of blogging over here.
Anyway, TV details:

First, This American Life returned on Sunday. I loved season 1, but I think season 2 is better in almost every way so far. That first episode left me speechless. And madly madly in love with Johnny Depp. I literally started crying when he started speaking for Mike. Because, I mean, that's pretty life-changing stuff right there for Mike (or anyone). Awesome. The episode was just so good. And the good news? You can get it on iTunes if you don't have Showtime. But don't take my word for it: Read this review, which sort of blew me away even before I'd seen the episode. I also went to the live event mentioned in the story, which was all kinds of awesome.
Next up: the aforementioned Gossip Girl. I really don't know whether to love this show for how far it goes or be annoyed. It's hard to find it remotely relatable, but for some reason, I can't peel myself away once I get started. And when I reach the end of a mini-marathon (which is how I always watch it), I'm annoyed that I didn't wait for more episodes because, without fail, it leaves me wanting more. As far as the current story arc with Serena ... it mostly just has me hating Michelle Trachtenberg (and I was one of the few Dawn defenders). Also, SHE KILLED SOMEONE?! Wha.... ? Yes, and that's the episode I decided to end my mini-marathon on, which means I won't even be able to let episodes build up for another mini-marathon, because Monday's episode will be watched immediately. Despite the crazy, I really can't wait to see how this plays out.
I'm behind on almost everything else, except How I Met Your Mother -- Britney's back this week! -- and Thursday night's comedies on NBC (except Earl; I'm behind on that, because I don't find it funny anymore).
And, obviously, I finished out the season of Big Brother. I rooted hard for James to win, and thought I'd stop watching when he left. But then I sort of started liking ... anyone who was not named Natalie Cunial. HATE. The final two were mostly meh, but I was fine with Adam winning.
What's your TV life been like lately?

Where have I been? | April 25, 2008
I have been very busy lately, hence not updating the blog. And by busy I mean:
1. Watching Big Brother. Obviously. Finale's on Sunday! Also: Bye, bye stupid Natalie:
2. Writing lots of stuff over at Movies Without Pity. Particularly, writing this blog and stuff for this blog and this blog.
3. Working at my regular job, which recently included editing this very cool interview with Bruce Campbell. Read it. It's awesome.
4. Planning my wedding. Which is sooner than I like to think about.

Hillary Clinton to visit The Daily Show With Jon Stewart | February 29, 2008
Sure, I would have rather she (or Barack Obama) show up on The Colbert Report, but how cool is it when an actual, serious presidential candidate will show up and chat with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show? So ... good for Hillary Clinton (who will appear on Monday's episode).
Comedy Central's press release says:
NEW YORK, February 29, 2008 -- Senator Hillary Clinton will make an appearance as a guest on "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" on Monday, March 3 at 11:00 p.m. (ET/PT). This will mark the Senator's second appearance on "The Daily Show," but her first since announcing her candidacy for the Democratic nomination. Clinton previously appeared as a guest on the show on October 8, 2003.
I know Mike Huckabee goes on Colbert from time to time (because of the Colbert bump, obviously), and John McCain used to go on The Daily Show fairly frequently, but I don't think he has since he's actually been running.
Anyway, it's Barack Obama's turn to step up. So ... Obama, get thee to The Colbert Report AND The Daily Show, STAT!

Big Brother: Awesome? Crazy? Awesomely crazy! | February 27, 2008
Last night's episode of Big Brother was one of the craziest things I've ever seen on reality TV, but not for the reasons Big Brother is usually crazy. It wasn't the trashiness that surprised me. It was the allergic reactions, seizures, and trips to the hospital. Here's part of the hypoglycemic seizure (which, of course, some of the houseguests now think she faked):
You can also watch the clip from the episode, which has more footage since the live feeds went dark after the incident. Or you can watch the full episode.
Honestly, it could help Amanda and Alex in the voting, which would send Oregon houseguest (and resident skank) Natalie back home to the "Beaver State" (as she's so fond of calling it). I'm pulling for Amanda and Alex to stay, Matt and Natalie to go home. Not just because I can't stand Natalie representing Oregon, but also because, without Amanda, there would be no, "Bueno!"
I'll probably have more to say after tonight's live eviction episode, so don't forget to check back.

Being a nerd pays off ... sort of | May 22, 2007
So, some of you might know how much of a nerd I am for the amazing Joss Whedon show Firefly. Well, being a nerd for it when it aired and becoming a Browncoat and forcing all of my closest friends and family to watch it. Well, apparently, there are many, many people like me, because look at this.
For those unwilling or uninterested, that link is to Amazon's list of "DVD Sleepers & Keepers," which they describe as such:
No matter what hot new release hits the market, Amazon customers still have their favorites. Year in and year out, these are the all-time DVDs you've loved the most. You may be surprised which, of the hundreds of thousands out there, made the top 200, but it's a testament to their staying power. ...
* These DVDs are our perennial top-sellers, consistently selling the most, month after month, over the last several years. They're all keepers, of course--but some, like Firefly: The Complete Series and Love Actually, have been quiet hits, selling copy after copy since the day they were released without ever having made industry headlines--those are our "sleepers."
Yes, everyone, Firefly is No. 2 (after Star Wars Trilogy). How cool is that?! You don't have to answer. I already know: Extremely.

Lauren Graham answers Gilmore rumor mill | May 07, 2007

Is it true that Alexis was the harder sell?
Graham: I don't think that's true. I did formally say at one point, "I'm not coming back." Then they thought, "Well, can we do it with just Alexis?" I don't want to speak for her, but we both went back and forth. Ultimately, neither of us wanted to do it without the other one.
She also answers questions about the changes she requested to the finale script, her rumored preference for Christopher (David Sutcliffe) because of her rumored dislike of Scott Patterson (Luke), and ending the show without creator Amy Sherman-Palladino. To put those "Lauren-hates-Scott" rumors to rest, though, there was this:
How would you characterize your working relationship with Scott over the years?
Graham: Totally great. It's a working relationship, like most of them are. But he was so great in that part. I really loved my scenes with him and the chemistry we had. Our banter was among the most fun stuff to do.
Anyway, lots more good stuff there. You should definitely read the whole thing if you like the show or even if you just like Hollywood insider-y stuff.

This is the show I used to love | May 01, 2007
I know that many people out there are completely in love with the idea of Veronica and Logan, but if they couldn't see how great Piz is in this episode, "Un-American Graffiti," well ... I can't help them.
All I can say is this: There has not been an episode of Veronica Mars that good at least since season 1 (remember when this show was more than just good?).
So, the Piz-Veronica moments were even better, I think, than the Logan-Veronica kiss in season 1. Mostly because Piz is the nice guy Veronica deserves (and maybe Logan is that guy for Parker, so ... more power to them, but all of the trying to hang out and dating your friend's ex still bugs me in a way I cannot forgive). But what else made this episode so good? We had the full cast of characters: Mac, Wallace, Sheriff Mars, Sacks, Piz, Logan, and especially Dick. Weevil was missing, and I barely noticed.
The verdict is in, then, folks: These stand-alone mysteries are going to be much BETTER than the big, seasonlong mystery because the writers can focus on longer-term story lines dealing with the characters. Thus making a stellar mostly plot-driven show character-driven and cementing it in my heart forever.
Keep your fingers crossed for renewal (before this episode, I wouldn't have been urging this). We should find out in just a couple of weeks!

I heart Ryan Gosling | April 30, 2007
As if I didn't already love Ryan Gosling more than is humanly possible. Watch the whole thing and you'll swoon, too (as if you weren't already). I am talking to guys AND girls, gay OR straight:

How much does Oswald hate you right now? | April 30, 2007
I know the Teletubbies quote was pretty funny, but it was much funnier when Oswald said, "How much do I hate you right now?" or something like that to the military guy who he had been walking back and forth past (and, to be fair, I felt that guy was hiding way better than the previous people's pilots).
At any rate, I KNEW my guys would be out, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt to watch. That said, I am now rooting with all my heart for Eric and Danielle, even though I felt they shouldn't be on the race since they aren't an original team. If you feel I need to explain my position, don't worry: I already did.
Most people don't agree with me about who should win (I even have a $7,000 bet with Nolan on the outcome; I say Eric and Danielle, he says Dustin and Kandice -- but neither of us can afford to pay that, so it will just go in the bank of bets we make and cannot pay on; I believe he owes me about $4 million currently).

The episode of The Amazing Race that I almost didn't see | April 22, 2007
You would not believe the trouble I had to go to just to see last night's episode of The Amazing Race. First, I should tell you: I record it on TWO TiVos, just in case something goes wrong. Little did I know that BOTH of them would malfunction, leaving me in a state of ... panic would not be overstating it.
Thank goodness for good friends who also watch my favorite shows, though, because Jen and Brian saved the day. I went to their house, got the tape, and managed to watch it and blog about it.
The lesson here is: Do NOT trust technology with your favorite shows. Have a backup for your backup's backup. Only then can you feel (sort of) safe.

We waited all this time for THAT?! | April 18, 2007
Finally, after weeks of waiting, we got a new episode of "Gilmore Girls" last night (called "Hay Bale Maze," after Taylor's Spring Fling labyrinth). It's always nice to see the titular girls back on my TV, of course. And the Townies can be fun in moderation -- they were used well in this episode, I thought.
BUT ... Read the rest of my rant at my other blog.
(And for those who think it's cheating to post a partial post here and send you to my other post, well ... it sort of is. But some days I only have one thing to write about, so you'll just have to live with it.)

Dread... | April 15, 2007
I am having a bad feeling about Danny and Oswald after they took the fast forward to finish first in a (STUPID) non-elimination leg of The Amazing Race. Grrrr. I want them in the final three and don't really care about much else. But there is that stupid curse in which almost every team I love the most ends up fourth place and I don't get to see them in the finale. I am having horrible fears that this will happen again. If it does, I will .... well, I'll still watch of course. But I'll probably cry and even scream a little. Can you imagine a finale with those other three lame teams?
To illustrate my curse of the fourth place, here are the teams who have finished fourth in the history of the show, with teams I LOVE in bold:

Reality check-in | April 03, 2007
So, two good reality shows in the past two days and still no posts from me? WHAT is wrong with this place?
Well, I'm here now, and ready to talk about The Amazing Race and Dancing With the Stars.
First, last night's Dancing. I might be unpopular for saying this, but I feel that the judges are scoring Heather higher than they would if she didn't have an artificial leg. I mean, certainly, she's doing well for someone with an artificial leg, but she should not have been tied for the lead last night.
Also, I love Clyde, but he has to go. He just seems so insecure/nervous/embarrassed and I HATE to watch him look that way. So ... please don't vote for him. I have a feeling that, like Chris Sligh on American Idol, he wants to go home.
My early favorites are Laila Ali and Apolo Anton Ohno. And the fact that they are getting less practice time than the others makes their performances even more exceptional. I also love Ian after last night, but I think that's all Cheryl's doing. I almost think it's unfair for anyone to get her as a partner because she's so much better at teaching and choreographing than the competition.
Anyway, this week is Shandi's time to go home. PLEASE. If I have to look at her and Brian's waxy, smiling faces anymore I might kill my television. And you all know how I feel about my television.
Now, for my favorite show (yes, FAVORITE, out of everything. Shut it.): The Amazing Race proved on Sunday that it doesn't need Rob and Amber or anything else to be a fantastic show. It took teams to Auschwitz and even those contestants who seem the most vapid were touched (OK, maybe not -- because did anyone else notice that Eric was moved by it, but while he spoke about the experience, Danielle was in the background smacking her gum? Maybe she has never heard of Auschwitz). I especially loved how the experience made Oswald appreciate that he lives in the U.S. rather than Cuba, and how the Guidos appreciated the time in which they were born. It's pretty phenomenal really that a gay couple the age of the Guidos is so appreciative of that, because you know their openly gay lifestyle can't have been easy 20 years ago. I love them.
And then ... their Philimination. Sad, but happy. Because they were happy. The fact that they have kissed so many times on TV this season shows just how far we've come as a country since season 1 (when I don't think they were ever shown being affectionate) or even since season 4 (when Reichen and Chip's kiss on the finish line was NOT in the show). It makes me happy. I know it's just a show, but MAN if it doesn't say a lot of things about the world in which we live.
So, I was sad it was the Guidos gone. I now am rooting for Danny and Oswald and Uchenna and Joyce to make final three. And I don't care if it's Charla and Mirna or Dustin and Kandice who join them, so long as it's not Eric and Danielle (they weren't even a real team, and don't belong in All Stars, I say). That said, I love this show no matter who's on it. I even loved season 6 -- the season of the annoying couples -- when the ugliest of Ugly Americans Freddy and Kendra won the $1 million.
Other episode highlights:
* Oswald's episode title quote to the piano teacher: "If I were in town, I would ask for your number."
* The beauty queens thinking Charla and Mirna's interactions are so hilarious because? THEY ARE! I think Mirna actually growled at Charla at the sausage table.
* When Dustin threw up, Eric's immediate, "Ladies and gentlemen, Miss California!" (Should have been the episode title.)
* Uchenna and Joyce and Danny and Oswald intersecting to get the fast forward. Yay! My two favorite teams at the top of the heap. And then Danny and Oswald giving up their prize without a second thought.
* Dustin and Kandice hiding from Charla and Mirna -- which, if they'd waited for the Guidos might have actually kept the Guidos from Philimination since the beauty queens and Guidos were the two fastest sausage eaters.
(How weird/surprising that I'm starting to like both Charla and Mirna AND the beauty queens?)
Also, for those of you who watched the Elimination Station video and were annoyed that it was only about the nonelimination portion of the episode: Go ahead and watch the one where the Guidos "arrive" now (there won't be more arrivals, I guess, because the Guidos are already closer to the finish line. DUMB!). It's now posted here (best line by Rob: "That's the alcohol talking" when Ian says he's happy to be there with all of them).

No sissy-footing here | March 19, 2007
(If you're here to read the latest news -- which is admittedly already old -- about Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls, just scroll down. Or click here.)
Now, as for last night's programming: The Amazing Race (which we all know is my favorite show and which has become THE watercooler show. If you're still talking about something else at work, you're, like, sooooo five minutes ago).
Things I LOVED:
1. Oswald chasing Phil at the mat. Classic. Ranks among the best moments in mat history (right up there with Brian and Greg's foot race in season 7)
2. Mirna's INSANITY. She's so annoying, it's almost become amusing at this point. Such as when she complains about the plight of short people (Charla) and SKINNY people (presumably she means herself). You know, I always do feel sorry for those poor, poor skinny women!
3. The Guidos beating the homophobic Eric to the mat in a footrace. Does Eric somehow think that "queens" are worse than men and women, thus Danielle should be ashamed of losing to them in a footrace? Because, hello? These are two in-shape guys, which has nothing to do with their sexual preference. (If he should criticize her for losing to them, it should be about age, if anything. The Guidos are near 60, after all.)
4. Kandice painting the little girl's nails for free. The girl has a heart after all, apparently. I'm hating this team much less.
5. EVERYTHING about the rat roadblock, from Ian's "You dirty rat!" to his seeing rats in a new light after finding out what they're capable of here, to Joyce thinking they're cute to Mirna freaking out at Charla's slow rat. I also loved the Guidos' interaction with their rat, Nelson. And I loved that Ian's rat was named Tupac. Hee.
6. Danny's use of the word "sissy-foot." Obviously.
But there was plenty to hate here, too (see Eric's homophobic remarks above and his "Freaks, freaks, freaks" earlier in the episode to the Guidos). I'm finding, though, that they did such a good job casting teams to loathe (Charla and Mirna; Eric and Danielle) that teams who were the villains of their own seasons (the Guidos, Dustin and Kandice, even Teri and Ian -- sort of) are downright likeable in comparison.
Either way, this is a fun season even without Rob and Amber. Take that, all you whiners naysayers!

This and that (Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls, specifically) | March 19, 2007
Thanks to Donut Shoppe for alerting me to the breaking (OK, so it broke a few days ago, but still...) news about Veronica Mars and Gilmore Girls:
According to Michael Ausiello at TVGuide.com, apparently Veronica could come back next season as an FBI agent four years in the future. Or she might not come back at all. And her fate could very well rest on whether Gilmore Girls returns. At this point, I'm voting Gilmore, but it's looking unlikely. Here's Ausiello's pertinent stuff:
And while we're clearing up false rumors, let me set the record straight about all this Veronica Mars fourth-season flash-forward business. Contrary to reports, Rob Thomas' retooled Mars would not take place at an FBI Academy, with Veronica serving as a trainee. Our favorite snarky sleuth would be an actual agent. Personally, I love the idea — even though it would probably trigger a major cast purge. There's also a rumor floating around that Mars' fate rests in the hands of Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel. Maybe, maybe not. While one insider says, "Clearly, Gilmore Girls not coming back would help Veronica Mars a lot," still another insists, "One has absolutely nothing to do with the other."
Either way, let's hope this whole mess gets resolved sooner rather than later. My faint heart can only take so much.

No more Gilmore Girls? | March 15, 2007
I just found out at this post at the donut shoppe (and by "donut," I think she means "TV) that there might not be another season of Gilmore Girls, which makes me want to cry. Don't worry, though: I won't.
(Also, I forgot to mention that October Road starts tonight. Will you be watching? I'm guessing by the lack of publicity for it that not many people will be.)

Surprise ending | March 11, 2007
I kind of predicted that ending to this latest episode of The Amazing Race (based on those previews), but it was still exciting and shocking to watch it play out. Don't read beyiond the jump or watch this latest video from Elimination Station unless you watched the ending and/or know who was eliminated.

Coming to your TV (if you act NOW)! | March 08, 2007
In the spirit of Isabel seeing the live taping of This American Life last night, I am going to implore all of you to get Showtime as soon as you can. You know that This American Life is, like, the best show in the history of radio, right? And that Showtime has begged Ira & Co. for years to let it become a TV show, and they finally acquiesced.
Well, do you also know that the wonderful new show starts in TWO WEEKS (March 22)? And that if you miss an episode, you will be missing out on one of the coolest things to happen to TV in a very long time. (I'm not sure if it will be available on iTunes; some Showtime shows are and the This American Life podcast is, so my hopes are high.)
Do you need more convincing? Well, sign up here for a $25 rebate and other special offers.
Still not enough? Here are three trailers:
The bonus, of course, is that you'd also get to watch Weeds, Brotherhood, Dexter, and new series The Tudors. Remember, I've told you Showtime is the new HBO, and I will repeat my plea that if you get just one premium, from here on out, it should be Showtime.

Zach Braff could get lots of money... | March 06, 2007
If Scrubs comes back again, which I think is likely whether on NBC or ABC, Zach Braff will get $350,000 an episode, putting him in a rare league:
Braff's new deal would put him in the top echelon of highest-paid male actors on television, alongside "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen, whose paycheck also is in the $350,000-per-episode range for the Warner Bros. TV-produced CBS sitcom.
I'm not sure he deserves to make so much more than his castmates, since I think Donald Faison and John C. McGinley are really the stars, but I don't make these decisions. Yet.

Parker Posey's new partner | March 06, 2007
I don't know how many of you have been following Amy Sherman-Palladino's (Gilmore Girls creator, for those who don't know) upcoming show (or at least pilot), The Return of Jezebel James. Well, Parker Posey is the star, which was exciting enough. And now this latest casting news: Lauren Ambrose (aka Claire on Six Feet Under) will play her sister.
I haven't been this excited about a new show in ... well, let's just say a VERY long time. I can't even remember when.
More casting news on lots of shows from TV Guide.

Farewell, David and Mary | March 05, 2007
So, last night's episode was the first really exceptional and suspenseful and riveting episode so far this season of The Amazing Race. Finally, this all-star edition lives up the hype (which I will admit I might have created all by myself). Even though the end result is not what I'd hoped (I know David and Mary didn't stand a chance at winning, but I would have loved to see them outlast Mirna and Charla, who are on my last never), it was a fantastic episode. Some highlights:
* Teri saying, "It was exciting falling in" after she fell off of her raft on the RAPIDS. I am really loving Teri and Ian this time, much more than I did season 3.
* People FREAKING out about touching the fish. No matter how many people acted like crazies, it never stopped being funny.
* All of Eric's "Use your boobs!" cheering, and then Rob's analysis of it later: "Not that I wasn't making comments about Amber ... They were just different types of comments."
* Danny and Oswald as they approached the mat, where Phil and a little person waited: "Charla's going to be in love!"
I am really loving almost every time. I even like ... GASP! ... Rob and Amber. Unbelievably enough. I still don't want people whose bios say "TV personality" to win the race, obviously, but with much more hateable teams like Charla and Mirna AND Dustin and Kandice (why do I have to hate both all-female teams? Why?), Rob and Amber are downright likeable. Plus, they are just not as mean as they were last time, which I like.
Here is the order I would like the remaining teams to finish, based on how much I like them:
1. Danny and Oswald
2. Teri and Ian
3. Guidos
4. Uchenna and Joyce (would be higher if they weren't returning winners)
5. Rob and Amber
6. Eric and Danielle
7. Charla and Mirna
8. Dustin and Kandice
That might not be a realistic final three, but right now we are down to such strong teams that this is really anyone's game. I think Charla and Mirna are the weak link, and anyone else could win this thing.
How much are you loving this all-star season? (Remember, if you're not watching, you're dead to me.)
Do you know what's getting me through the week between episode (other than my other shows)? I will tell you: SO many online video clips. Yay! This season they are even doing this cool Elmination Station thing where we get to see the Philimated teams hanging out in their very fancy Acalpulco resort.

Heroes delivers | March 01, 2007
There's something about that latest episode of Heroes that just ... resonated in a way that the previous episodes hadn't. It was as if all of this build-up and drama and mystery finally opened up to reveal something else: emotion. Because for all of its amazing action and story lines and details and characters, this was the first time the show played on any real emotions. And for me? That was the final hook. I'm in now, people. For good.
Finding out that Horn-Rimmed Glasses was a good guy (even though we don't know what kind of mysterious eeeeeevil he has been doing with the heroes all of these years) right before we had to watch him get shot and then have his mind erased was pretty frakking insane. And Hayden Panettiere (Claire) played that part with real, raw emotions that made so much sense, even after all of the anger she'd been feeling toward her dad. She realized at virtually the same time we, as an audience, did that he was making a real sacrifice -- that everything he'd been doing was a sacrifice -- for her. He might have done some things wrong, but he really was (mostly) acting with the safety of Claire in mind. And that's noble.
And watching Claire walk out of the burning house all charred and slowly morph back into healthy Claire? Really phenomenal television, as far as I'm concerned.
I know there have been some complaints that this show isn't all it's hyped to be, but this episode really proves that it is, and that it will live up to the promise.
Questions remain, though, obviously (but, unlike on Lost, we will be getting answers this season), such as:
1. What the HECK is up with Simone in the preview? I thought "Someone dies. Someone flies." They better not bring that person back from the dead, or their teasers will never mean anything. Oh, wait, they already don't... since the world isn't exactly saved yet even though the cheerleader was saved, right?
2. Who is Eric Roberts? And how is Hiro's dad involved? He's clearly not Linderman judging from next week's trailer, so ... who?
3. Who is the person whose opinion supersedes HRG's concering Claire, where the Haitian was concerned? We know it's not Eric Roberts or George Takei, because they didn't know about Claire's powers until this episode. Maybe it's Nathan and he knows more than he's letting on? Or Peter?
4. What is the Invisible Man's role in it all. Who was the hero he was protecting?
5. What are they trying to tell us with the latest catch phrase, "No one is safe"? Anything?
If you're interested in seeing a sneak peek of next week's episode, here is six minutes of clips for your enjoyment:

I amaze even myself | February 20, 2007
So, remember when I had a list of movies a mile long to see before the Oscars in order to see everything nominated for picture, director, all acting awards and the screenplay awards? Well, I've come a long way since then. I have three movies left to see this week (in addition to the short films, which I'll be seeing too!) in order to have seen all of those categories.
Here's a full breakdown (including who I'd vote for if I were a member of the Academy -- NOT a reflection of who I think will actually win):

Sadness | February 18, 2007
So, sad first elimination on the premiere of The Amazing Race: All Stars (by the way, could someone please explain why the all-star season didn't need a two-hour premiere?). I was hoping it would be Dustin and Kandice or Rob and Amber -- but then I didn't even hate Rob and Amber last night. I'm certainly not rooting for them, but they were nice and funny. Especially Rob, with having the shuttle wait for Danny and Oswald (one of my favorite teams).
All in all, the episode was a little ho-hum. I think I built this moment up too much or something, because it was sort of anti-climactic. (So, if you tuned it at my constant nagging and weren't overwhelmed, well ... just wait. It will get better. I have faith.)

The Amazing Race All Stars cast | January 24, 2007
OK, so my good sources were wrong about a number of things concerning the teams for The Amazing Race: All Stars -- mainly the NUMBER of teams. There are 11 (I had 14 in my guess list). They're announced. Apparently it happened while I was on vacation last week. Grrr.
So, here is my take on it all, season by season:
Season 1:
Kevin and Drew: YAY! Yay, yay, yay! My early favorites. I love them and want them to win. Go Kevin and Drew.
Joe and Bill (the Guidos): Glad they're back, and I think that they actually have a very good shot at winning. They did a good job the first time and now they've watched for 10 seasons!!
Season 2:
Oswald and Danny: OK, I love them, too. I won't be upset if these guys win, and I think they could if there is no whining this time!!
Season 3:
JohnVito and Jill: Another favorite team of mine, I think these two have a fighting chance. And what's awesome is that this isn't about seeing if they're meant to be. They're too grounded, and they know they are.
Teri and Ian: I didn't hate them as much as many others did, but ... meh. They shouldn't be back. Instead we should have someone from a season that doesn't have any returners.
Season 4:
NO ONE. I would have loved to see the clowns, Jon and Al, back. I don't understand how an all-star season can't include the BEST. TEAM. EVER.
Season 5:
Charla and Mirna: I hate Mirna and am pretty upset these ladies are back. I think a number of the producers' choices were about having all-women teams back, but why not Emily and Nancy (season 1) or Monica and Sheree (season 4)?
Season 6:
Again, NO ONE. Why not Lori and Bolo? Or Kris and Jon?
Season 7:
Rob and Amber: I could live my life without ever seeing them on TV again. I think they even have their own dumb show on some cable channel. But I won't watch it. They bug.
Uchenna and Joyce: I LOVE them, but don't really like that only one winning team gets to come back. Why is that? I'd rather the slot go to someone who didn't win unless more winning teams were to return.
Season 8:
NONE, thank goodness. I hated Family Edition.
Season 9:
Eric and Danielle: This is that weird combo team, but I would have rather seen Eric and Jeremy back. I didn't like Danielle or Dani much, but I liked Eric and Jeremy. I get they were trying to shake it up with this pairing, but ... it's more boring than anything.
Season 10:
David and Mary: I love them. I hope they make friends again, but that they run their own race. This will be even more competitive than season 10, so they need to be on their game to stand a chance. I'd love to see them make it far again, though. They're just good people.
Dustin and Kandice: I'm less happy about seeing them back than about Rob and Amber, so that's saying something. There are better all-female teams out there to choose. And if they felt like they need to draw from recent seasons to get viewers, well, they should have gone with the Chos or someone who people didn't HATE quite so much.
Your thoughts?

TV returns to TV | January 24, 2007
So, Veronica Mars? I loved it ... mostly because of Mac. And I know my girls over at the We Heart Logan blog will hate me for this, but I want Veronica with Piz, not Logan. I'm also sick of everything being SUCH A BIG DEAL between Veronica and Logan. Like, he messes up, she throws a fit. I don't know. I guess it's just played out for me. (Please, don't hate me. I still love Logan, and I still like the idea of them being together someday, but there's nothing to do there now apparently expect make her scream and cry -- which I HATE). But I love Mac's new vegan boy. My only quibble is that the O'Dell murder is so easy to solve. It's clearly Landry's assistant and I don't understand why that hasn't been solved yet. New big mystery please.
Also, Heroes was amazing. I love how all of the story lines -- and thus the heroes -- are coming together. I love that Nathan is becoming not such a jerk. I love Peter always. I love that Claire is re-befriending Zach. I love that Dr. Who is new invisible man. I didn't even hate Niki/Jessica behind bars. And I LOVE Micah and D.L. I can't wait to see it all come together.
I also thoroughly enjoyed the Gilmore Girls Christmas in January episode. It was very fun and very Gilmore-ian. Even April and Luke's story line didn't bug me -- and April usually does. Tying it in to Lorelai's story makes it much better, I think. I really loved having Rory and Lorelai together, though. I didn't realize how much I'd missed that. And Gigi being with them was like a cherry on top. She's adorable and cute (even if they did use the clip of her laughing TWICE in one scene!!)
And Battlestar Galactica had a pivotal episode. Of course Adama didn't kill Lee and Starbuck by nuking the planet, but that wasn't what the episode was about. It was about the remaining five cylons and how Deanna saw them but then her model got shut down (put into cold storage ... indefinitely) before revealing it to anyone. And it was also about the fact that Starbuck is completely freaking connected. I mean, like, totally. She drew the Eye of Jupiter as a child -- this is her destiny. And it frakkin' rocks.
I think that's about all. Oh, unless you care that Lost might have an end in site (you should, even if you don't watch).

Oscar mania | January 23, 2007
I'm pretty happy with the results of the Oscar nominations. I'm especially happy about Ryan Gosling's nod, even though I know that Forest Whitaker will win that category. I'm also happy about Mark Wahlberg's nomination, but annoyed that Leonardo DiCaprio got one for Blood Diamond instead of The Departed. Wha ...? Also, Babel for best picture? Ridiculous!
In order to see all of the movies in major categories (picture, acting, directing, screenwriting) in time for my annual Oscar party, here's what I'll need to watch in the coming weeks:
Blood Diamond
Children of Men
The Devil Wears Prada
Dreamgirls
Letters from Iwo Jima
Little Children
Little Miss Sunshine
Notes on a Scandal
Pan's Labyrinth
The Pursuit of Happyness
United 93
Venus
Volver
Do you think I'm daunted by this list? Well ... I'm not. I might even try to see stuff in other categories. If you didn't follow the link above, the full list of nominees is below.

It actually happened | January 19, 2007
So, the whole Papa Bear Bill O'Reilly meets student Stephen Colbert did actually happen yesterday. It wasn't as great as I'd hoped it would be, but there were certainly delightful moments. Here is Part 1 of the interview on The Colbert Report. And Part 2.
Here's the interview from The O'Reilly Factor:
And here's the end, where O'Reilly and some talking heads discuss the popularity of The Colbert Report and The Daily Show:
