Let's NOT boycott the CW, OK? | June 08, 2007
OK, I must rant about the CW boycott that Shopkeep and Carrisa said in yesterday's comments that they're joining (sorry, ladies):
Here's my problem with it. First of all, remember when I posted about the final ratings of the season? Well, if you followed the link to the season's ratings, you might have noticed something about Veronica Mars: It ranked 138th out of 142 shows, and every show beneath it is either a comedy (which I believe have different costs/standards) or a canceled show.

Now, Dawn Ostroff? She loves this show. She's been a huge supporter -- as you would realize if you've been paying attention to the fact that the ratings have been this bad EVERY SEASON and she has renewed it twice. She still has yet to close the door on it for good this time (remember, it aired as a "season finale" not "series finale" despite it not being on next season's schedule; I think she has another week to make a decision), AND she's reportedly in talks with Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell about another show they can do together on the CW.
This is a lady who loves Veronica Mars as much as any of you do -- probably more -- but she also has a job that requires her to make tough decisions. She's hung on to this show longer than most networks would have. In fact, at any other network, those numbers would have had it canceled after one or two episodes of season one. At UPN/CW (both under Ostroff), we got THREE SEASONS.
I think it's greedy and a more than a little ridiculous to boycott a network that stuck behind your show for so long even when it made absolutely no financial sense to do so. So ... boycott if you want to, but go into it with the full realization of what Ostroff and the CW have done, which is to stick by this little show when no one else would have. If you must boycott, I would have recommended boycotting the network for canceling Everwood, which had much higher ratings and was canceled to make room for 7th Heaven. I'm still upset about that one -- more than I am about this one, by a long shot -- and I still didn't boycott.
(Also, unless you're a Nielsen household, what's boycotting going to do -- other than keep you from possibly finding your next favorite show? And if you ARE a Nielsen household, you're hurting all of the folks who work on those shows -- regular people like you and me -- and the fans of those new struggling shows more than you're going to hurt the netlet, which will just cancel, cancel, cancel until it finds itself a hit.)
So, think about it. That's all I ask.

Jericho to return | June 07, 2007
In another sign that being nuts pays off, CBS announced today that Jericho will be back.
So, fans, get to work bringing back Veronica Mars, would you? And while you're at it, could you do something to resurrect Everwood, Joan of Arcadia, Arrested Development, Angel, Farscape, Freaks and Geeks, Undeclared, Kitchen Confidential, and Firefly? Thanks!

Veronica Mars canceled | May 17, 2007
Veronica Mars is over, apparently. And while this is VERY sad (especially because we lost Gilmore Girls this season, too), I think fans should also feel lucky that it lasted this long considering how underwhelming the ratings were from the very beginning. So ... what will we be watching next season?!

Upfront mania -- and MORE | May 15, 2007
So, in case you feel that I'm ignoring all of the Upfront news (the CW has renewed basically everything except no word on Veronica Mars yet; CBS canceled Jericho, probably; ABC renewed October Road but not What About Brian?), I'm not. I'm just reading the TV Guide coverage constantly -- too constantly to blog about it myself, especially since I'm not AT the Upfronts. I'll leave it to them. You should, too.
But don't forget to read my blog post about Heroes. Or to watch tonight's SERIES finale of Gilmore Girls.
And if you missed Stephen Colbert's Korean music video, you must watch it now:

Rosie vs. Trump | January 09, 2007
Honestly, this saga has been cracking me up, but this letter The Donald wrote to Rosie (coming on the heels of Rosie yelling at Barbara) almost feels ... fake. Or at the least like a publicity stunt (which really didn't help, judging by the ratings for the premiere of The Apprentice on Sunday). But, hey, it's sure making The View more popular. I haven't heard this much about the show ... well, ever.
Has anyone been watching it? I've heard Rosie's actually made it a lot more fun to watch.

One more | November 13, 2006

Something for everyone | November 12, 2006
So much has been happening in the world of TV that I give you a list of news items. Fun!
* Since I love everything Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant touch (including my favorite thing, the podcast, and even Karl's book), I am thinking I'll love the U.S. version of The Office a little bit more at the end of this month, when Ricky and Steve write an episode. I can hardly wait.
* If you've been waiting patiently to find out which of your favorite shows will finish out their seasons and which ones won't, there have been some recent announcements:
1. The adorable Men in Trees not only has been picked up for a full season, but also has been moved to Thursday nights after Grey's Anatomy. Poor, poor Six Degrees.2. Studio 60 got a full season pickup! Yay! NBC has promised it's going to stick with its quality shows that are struggling, so let's hope that's true for Friday Night Lights, as well. That's become my favorite new show.
3. Justice has been pulled for the rest of sweeps -- never a good sign.
4. Those of you missing Smith or Kidnapped now can watch them on their networks' websites. Kidnapped is here, and Smith is here.
* And because I love them and cannot resist posting another interview with them, David and Mary from The Amazing Race talked to TV Guide.com. Have I mentioned how awesome they are?
(Soon, I'll post about midseason shows, since it's that time. And since it's also time that I admit I've given up on many, many shows, I'll update you soon on what's still worth watching.)

On with the show... | October 23, 2006
I'm not even going to go into how tired I am of The Office and its very horrible idea to steer so far away from Ricky Gervais' brilliant U.K. version. No, I won't go there. Too many people get angry when you say the U.S. office isn't as good as the original.
But I will talk about a few bits of recent news that, if I were a better TV Goddess, I would have addressed last week:
First, there has been much controversy and infighting at Grey's Anatomy that ended with T.R. Knight coming out to People magazine. Boo to the fighting -- especially if the slurs really were said. And good for Knight for coming out. However, producers better keep his character straight. They are breaking some ground here, and it would be nice for them to keep it that way.
Second, what about NBC's decision to do away with scripted programming in the 8 p.m. hour? Is that the dumbest television decision since Happy Hour got the greenlight? It's certainly dumb to make such a blanket decision about seven hours of programming. Matt Roush and Tim Goodman put it much more eloquently than I do (in other words, they go beyond saying NBC chief Jeff Zucker is a big dummy-head), though, so go read their takes here: Roush and Goodman.
Last, several new shows have gotten full-season pickups. None of the latest announcements are all that exciting to me, though. What show would you most like to see picked up? Or canceled?

Schedule changes | October 10, 2006
Thank you, Matt Roush, for doing what I have been too lazy to get around to. If you are wondering where your favorite show has moved to, TV Guide's Roush tracks all of the schedule changes here.
In related news, CBS's early cancellation of Smith might mean they air their new medical drama 3 Lbs sooner than expected. Really, we need more medical shows, don't we? That's exactly what I was thinking.
Speaking of medical shows, though, Scrubs season 4 is on DVD today. Buy it.

The knife is officially unsheathed | October 06, 2006
So, the cancellations began today. The "official" ones, that is. I kind of believe those early pulled Fox shows ('Til Death, Justice and Happy Hour) are as good as dead, but officially, Smith got the axe. And Kidnapped was moved to Saturdays, which is a burnoff day and a sign of inevitable doom.
If you want to read a very amusing take on the cancellation drama -- which is almost as exciting as many of the shows themselves -- you can read an instant message conversation between two Entertainment Weekly writers over at the EW.com popwatch blog. It's very fun. Go now.

Confession: I don't watch Grey's Anatomy | September 25, 2006
Judging from those CSI-defeating numbers, I am the only one not watching Grey's Anatomy. Honestly, it seems too complicated to start now, without watching from the beginning. Is it? I have to say, I'd love to watch almost anything that beats CSI.
In other Grey's news, as those of you in Canada already know, Disney sent the wrong episode to CTV and the network ended up airing episode 2 instead of the season premiere in Canada. How mad would that make you? Read more at the Toronto Star. I think that's actually inexcusable, but there is no quality control. It's not like people can go anywhere else to get their Grey's Anatomy in Canada, right?

Fall Fashion Week for your TiVo | September 17, 2006
How did I ever live in a world without TiVo? I can't even imagine living with only one, or with two that aren't dual tuners. I am spoiled, and insane.
But you benefit, because you get to read my TiVos list -- or, as I like to think of it, my guide to what YOUR TiVo(s) should be wearing this fall -- listed by time slot (so that you'll understand why some things are in TiVo 1, which is in my living room, and why some are in TiVo 2, in the bedroom). I will link the new shows to their respective home pages and I'll bold those that should be watched by all of you if you want to be my friend. I might be kidding. My point is, those are the shows I recommend most highly.
Anyway, here you go. A complete list of what I'll be watching, at least to start the season:

Fox and CW weigh in | May 18, 2006
I was going to post a press release I received at 2 a.m. about Fox's new schedule, but I didn't have anything to link to, so I ended up waiting until I could post about Fox AND the CW.
Fox first: The O.C. is back. And the biggest surprise is that The Loop also is (in January). Don't ask me how that happened. I have tried several times to watch it and find it completely unfunny in its raunch. The full fall schedule. And the full schedule starting in January.
New Fox shows I'm most looking forward to: Justice (Victor Garber! Yay!), Standoff (both Ron Livingston AND Gina Torres? This show better be good!), and Vanished (we all know how I feel about Gale Harold, right? I'm so glad he has a new starring vehicle, and I really hope it's good.) I also think the midseason offering The Winner better be good (since Rob Corddry is in it).
Now for the sad news: Everwood is officially gone and I am officially angry/sad/frustrated. It is the show I most wanted to return next season, and it's gone. But I will try not to dwell on it (if you want to, though, you can read creator/executive producer Greg Berlanti's own thoughts about it here), and instead focus on Veronica Mars being back. That's good news, after all. I also won't think about the fact that One Tree Hill is back, because that is unbelievable to me. Even more unbelievable? SO IS 7TH HEAVEN. I know ... WHAT in the world?! The full CW schedule.
I am looking forward to one of the network's new shows: Runaway.
Also, here is the CW's logo, which tells me something about the network's taste:

CBS sets fall schedule | May 17, 2006
CBS made its big announcement today, and it obviously had the least work to do. The full schedule. Courting Alex and Out of Practice are gone, but The New Adventures of Old Christine will be back, which is good news. Of course, Love Monkey is gone, but that's no surprise. Yes, Dear and Still Standing were canceled, too. I guess it was the year to kill the comedy at CBS, with rare exceptions.
The shows I'm most excited about next season (other than my returning favorite The Amazing Race, which moves to 8 p.m. Sunday (Lynne, you can watch it!) are: The Class (it's an interesting premise AND will allow me to watch Jason Ritter and Andrea Anders even though their previous shows are gone), Jericho (Skeet Ulrich is back!), and Smith (sounds like Heist and with Ray Liotta). Even Shark has potential. I don't know what CBS is going to do with its midseason shows. It sounds like another solid season for the network.

Good, bad and worse news | May 16, 2006
Michael Ausiello at TV Guide is reporting that Veronica Mars will be back for at least 13 episodes. He is reporting with less certainty (but still enough to piss me off) that One Tree Hill also will be back, and that Everwood will not.
First Deadwood, now Everwood? With neither of the amazing dramas with the -wood suffixes back next season, I might cry.
I guess we'll find out with certainty when the CW has its upfront date on Thursday.

Up next: ABC | May 16, 2006
ABC was next to make its big upfront announcement today. The full schedule.
As was announced yesterday, Invasion was canceled. So was The Evidence. But What About Brian will be back, which makes me happier than it should. (So will Boston Legal, George Lopez and even, strangely enough, The Bachelor. Grey's Anatomy will move to Thursday (a smart move because it can be used like Desperate Housewives as a lead-in for new shows).
The new shows that have the most promise: Day Break (mostly because I want to root for Taye Diggs and Adam Baldwin to have a show that lasts), The Big Day (cool premise of every episode taking place on one day from a different perspective, but it can't last too many episodes in one season. Can it?), Brothers & Sisters (because it means Ron Rifkin will still be on my TV), Traveler, and Men in Trees.
Once again, Zap2it has full coverage.

NBC first to announce fall schedule | May 15, 2006
The upfronts began today when NBC announced its lineup for fall. No big surprises here. Of course, NBC once again is holding Scrubs until later in the season, which baffles/annoys me. And Conviction appears to be gone (not my fault, Isabel! I promise.), which is a bit of a surprise. Other than that, though, no huge changes. The full schedule. I'm most looking forward to Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (starring Matthew Perry), Tina Fey's 30 Rock (starring Fey and Alec Baldwin), and Heroes.
Zap2it has a very thorough guide to the announcement and the new shows and the upfronts in general.

I think this qualifies as bad news | April 12, 2006
So, do you think Veronica Mars will survive the UPN-WB merger? Here is the ratings news from its first night on a new time:
And on the netlets, new episodes of "Gilmore Girls" (households: 2.9/5, #13; adults 18-49: 1.7, #11) and "Pepper Dennis" (households: 1.6/2, #15; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T15) on The WB (households: 2.2/3, #5; adults 18-49: 1.3, #5) coasted by a repeat of "America's Next Top Model" (households: 1.5/3, #16; adults 18-49: 0.9, #T15) and a new episode of the newly relocated "Veronica Mars" (households: 1.4/2, #17; adults 18-49: 0.8, #17) on UPN (households: 1.4/2, #6; adults 18-49: 0.9, #6).
It is not looking good.

Wednesday's ratings | April 06, 2006
So, of course Fox, with American Idol, won the night, but here's the stuff that matters (from the futon critic), about MY shows that either just moved or are about to move.
Falling to fourth place was CBS (households: 6.3/10, #4; adults 18-49: 3.1, #4) with the Wednesday premiere of "The Amazing Race 9" (households: 5.0/8, #10; adults 18-49: 3.1, #9) and repeats of "Criminal Minds" (households: 6.4/10, #8; adults 18-49: 2.8, #10) and "CSI: NY" (households: 7.7/13, #5; adults 18-49: 3.5, #T6).Compared with its last Tuesday airing (households: 5.7/9; adults 18-49: 3.8 on 3/28/06), "Race" was up 10.53% in households but down 18.42% in adults 18-49.
And on the netlets, new episodes of "America's Next Top Model" (households: 3.3/6, #14; adults 18-49: 2.4, #T11) and "Veronica Mars" (households: 1.9/3, #16; adults 18-49: 1.2, #16) on UPN (households: 2.6/4, #5; adults 18-49: 1.8, #5) easily topped fresh installments of "One Tree Hill" (households: 2.0/3, #15; adults 18-49: 1.3, #15) and "The Bedford Diaries" (households: 1.3/2, #17; adults 18-49: 0.8, #17) on The WB (households: 1.6/2, #6; adults 18-49: 1.0, #6).

Very important news | April 04, 2006
First of all, Gilmore Girls is back tonight.
There also is a new Scrubs. And last week's episode of Veronica Mars repeats in the time slot the new episodes will be in starting next week (and the solution for those wanting to watch Veronica Mars and Scrubs who don't have a TiVo or VCR is that the current season of Scrubs has come to iTunes. So you don't have to choose between two of my favorite shows.)
And The Amazing Race moves to Wednesday this week, at 8 p.m. -- a smart move, I think, since it's kind of a family-friendly show and 10 p.m. is WAY too late for it. (Not that I care, since I have TiVo, but I'm trying to think about other people for a change.)
And, in other scheduling news that I am WAY late on (because I actually had a fun life during spring break), Prison Break got official season 2 renewal. Yay!
And, last and certainly least (and most surprising), Deal or No Deal beat the NCAA Finals. Weird.

Veronica Mars is moving | March 26, 2006
Veronica Mars is moving back to Tuesdays starting April 11. This is good news for a few reasons:
1. The powers-that-be at the CW can test a Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars Tuesday night lineup. That means that everyone out there watching Gilmore should switch over to Veronica after it's over.
2. It won't have to compete with Lost or American Idol, and so its numbers might pick up a bit.
3. It will be back in its original timeslot, which likely is when many longtime viewers still think of it as airing/expect it to air. I know that if it weren't for my TiVo having its own brain (far superior to mine, obviously), I would probably be confused.
(In other scheduling news, Alias will be back with a two-hour episode on April 19.

The Unit retains high ratings | March 15, 2006
A week later, it seems everyone still likes The Unit. From a CBS release:
I credit Dennis Haysbert for this. Fans of 24 probably miss his calming presence over there.
THE UNIT posted a 10.9/16 with 17.78m viewers, 6.6/14 in adults 25-54 and 4.9/11 in adults 18-49 -- second behind an extended episode of FOX's "American Idol." Compared to last week's premiere, THE UNIT retained 96% of its viewers (from 18.50m) and adults 18-49 (from 5.1/12) rating and 94% of its adult 25-54 rating (from 7.0/13).
I just hope the upcoming The Evidence and Heist do as well. I like them both.

Yet another premiere | March 13, 2006
If anyone is interested in seeing Julia Louis-Dreyfus's latest incarnation on the small screen, The New Adventures of Old Christine premieres tonight at 8:30 p.m. on CBS. In the pilot, Christine finds out her ex is dating a "new" Christine. Thus making her "old Christine." Get it?
It's the latest midseason attempt at comedy. Hopefully this one will work better than most, for Louis-Dreyfus's sake. CBS at least has had some midseason luck with leading ladies. I think Courting Alex has been the only midseason show that can remotely be called a hit (and that might be a stretch).

More on CBS and The Unit | March 08, 2006
A CBS press release today said:
"The Unit's" 18.2 Million Viewers Makes it the Most Watched Time Period Premiere of Any New Scripted Show on Any Network This Season and the Second Highest Rated Drama Premiere in Adults 18-49"The Unit" Delivers CBS's Best Performance in the Time Period Since May 1999
"The Unit" Builds On Its Huge "NCIS" Lead-In By Double Digit Percentages in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54
"The Amazing Race 9" Wins Its New Time Period in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54
I don't know how much of that is CBS's positive spin, but it seems the show did well. I will go ahead and take some credit for that. Because we all know the power I wield, right?
By the way, I checked the futon critic, and it turns out it's some spin, some truth. Like most network press releases. The Futon Critic says:
Despite new lineups launching on three other networks, FOX (households: 14.6/22, #1; adults 18-49: 10.0, #1) remained unstoppable on Tuesday thanks to its pairing of "American Idol" (households: 16.7/25, #1; adults 18-49: 11.6, #1) and "House" (households: 12.6/19, #2; adults 18-49: 8.4, #2).CBS (households: 9.5/15, #2; adults 18-49: 4.2, #2) however got some good news in the former of "The Unit" (households: 11.5/18, #3; adults 18-49: 5.1, #3), which built off its "NCIS" (households: 11.0/17, #4; adults 18-49: 3.8, #T4) lead-in by 4.35% in households and a whopping 34.21% in adults 18-49. Even better, "The Unit" built its audience between half-hours by 2.66% in households (11.3/17 vs. 11.6/18) and 10.42% in adults 18-49 (4.8 vs. 5.3). Closing out the night then was "The Amazing Race 9" (households: 6.1/10, #7; adults 18-49: 3.8, #T4).
And, also, I still recommend it, so tune in next week, too. (Also, the premiere will repeat Saturday at 8 p.m., for those who missed it! Yay!)

More rumor mill | February 28, 2006
According to New York Post's Page 6, it's been picked up for 26 episodes by Showtime (Thanks, Isabel, for finding this, thus making it clear you deserve the title of TV Goddess more than I do. But I'm not letting it go).
I've been hearing this rumor for a while, and I know the offer from Showtime has been out to Mitch for 26 episodes. Still awaiting official word, but it's looking/sounding good.

Date set for Alias | February 28, 2006
So, there's good news and there's bad news. According to a Futon Critic article, Alias will be back (and, as I learned on the TV Guide podcast not too long ago, with Michael Vartan for six or eight episodes, in addition to visits from Bradley Cooper and Lena Olin. Yay!) BUT, the episode order has been cut to 17. Boo. Hiss.
Here's the word from The Futon Critic on the short order:
The final season of ABC's "Alias" just got a little shorter as the show's creator/executive producer J.J. Abrams confirmed to the site over the weekend that the veteran spy drama will close after 17 episodes this season, not 22 as originally indicated.
And on the return date, which I guess, technically, is just speculation:
Industry insiders however have speculated the show will rejoin the network's schedule on Wednesday, April 19 at 8:00/7:00c, the week after "The George Lopez Show" and "Freddie" are expected to wrap their respective seasons.

Joey's uncertain future | February 24, 2006
This is kind of old news, unless you're like me and totally missed it, but NBC does have Joey on its midseason schedule, according to a press release about The Office:
In addition, "Joey" returns with original episodes on Tuesday, March 7 at 8-8:30 p.m. (ET), in place of "Fear Factor" which will return to the schedule this summer. Encore broadcasts of "Joey" will air at 8:30-9 p.m. (ET) from March 7-21 until "Scrubs" encore broadcasts take over on March 28.
I don't know if this is NBC's attempt to give Joey a chance to improve in the ratings, or if this is what they call "burning off" the episodes. But considering that one of the show's stars, Andrea Anders, has signed to star with Jason Ritter in The Class on CBS, I am thinking it's probably the latter.

Two more down | February 19, 2006
For those keeping track of these things, UPN has canceled Get This Party Started (thank you), and ABC "quietly" pulls Crumbs (no big loss there, either).
So, where are all of the good shows? Tune in to my column in a couple of weeks when I'll review the March premieres.
And have we had a successful NEW midseason show this season? I think the answer would be no.

Not a good sign | February 16, 2006
I got this note from the WB today:
Please note that The WB's “EVERWOOD” will now return on Monday, March 27th ( 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET), rather than the previously announced date of March 20.
They've already kept it off the air so long I don't remember what happened last, and now they're pushing it back another week. That is NOT the way to get the CW people to pick up this fantastic show, WB people. Grrrr...

Pinch me | February 12, 2006
Am I dreaming? Or did Dancing with the Stars really beat Survivor in Thursday's ratings?
Not that I think Dancing with the Stars is spectacular, but I certainly prefer it to Survivor. And I prefer to live in a country where it does better in the ratings. So, thank you, America, for wising up about this Survivor craze being nothing but nonsense.
(Am I getting a bit ahead of myself? THAT would be unlikely. Ha!)

Someone is dead to me | February 09, 2006
So, who around here doesn't understand the rules? I don't know how, but I'll find whoever it was that didn't take me seriously when I said to watch Love Monkey. Now it's gone. And it's all your fault.
You read me right, people. Someone is dead to me. (I'm channeling my inner Colbert.)
Also, is it just me or are we all sick of this "hiatus" thing, when what it really means is that they're easing everyone into cancellation? Rarely do they bring these shows back from "hiatus."

Where are my shows? | February 03, 2006
Sorry for the many posts today, but none are too long, so I trust you can get through them all.
Since the announcement of the CW, one of my favorite shows has barely been mentioned. Except by me, of course, here (under "Five Shows to watch...") and here. Well, now, according to Ask Ausiello at TV Guide:
I have some really depressing news on that subject, but first some much-needed good news: WB announced Tuesday that Everwood will return to its original Monday time period next month, beginning with a two-hour episode on March 20. (Supernatural heads to Thursdays after Smallville — a much better fit, if you ask me.) Now, back to the bad news: According to one of my industry moles, an early draft of CW's fall schedule is making the rounds in Hollywood, and Everwood is not on it. Now, that doesn't mean it won't be back next season, but it's certainly proof that TV's most underappreciated drama series is fighting for its life.
And, on another frustrating scheduling note (about another show on an extra-long hiatus), I'm sure you've all heard about how ABC hasn't set a date for the last half of the final season of Alias. Well, I sure hope they do, because of this juicy nugget from the Ausiello Report:
Bradley Cooper isn't the only familiar Alias face returning for the show's 100th episode, airing, um, whenever ABC finds room on its schedule. I'm told that Gina Torres will reprise her role as Syd's archenemy, Anna Espinosa, in the landmark installment, which begins production next week and airs — all together now — "whenever ABC finds room on its schedule."

UPN, WB to merge | January 24, 2006
Katie beat me to the punch with the news that the WB and UPN are going to merge into a network called The CW.
However, do NOT say I didn't tell you this might happen. Because I linked to a big fat article not too long ago, simply because it said the WB might die. It wasn't entirely wrong.
As to the question of what will air, apparently the press release mentioned "available" programs, but Everwood was not mentioned. Everything else I love on either network was. I will be angry if Everwood is not part of the plan. I guess we'll have to wait and see, because their lineup will not be announced for awhile -- probably not until the upfronts.
But this is probably good news for anyone who watches either network. Because it will ensure they both get to stay on the air at least longer than they might have otherwise.

Update on Arrested Development | January 17, 2006
So, it looks like it is "highly unlikely" that Fox will be bringing back the best comedy on television, but there is "no definitive final answer" yet, according to Fox Entertainment President Peter Liguori.
It also seems that even he thinks Showtime is the best place for it. So, that bodes well for Showtime and for fans.
Fox also announced the cancellations of other sitcoms today.

Busy day | January 13, 2006
There is so much going on today in the world of television that I've felt too overwhelmed to post until now (especially since I already posted today's column. That said, here are some highlights to send you into your weekend:
1. Fox will air final four episodes of "Arrested Development" opposite Olympics opening ceremonies. No contest, right? AD always wins. Or should.
2. For those of you who watch "My Name is Earl" and who don't speak Spanish. When it appeared that Catalina was insulting Joy last week (Joy's response: "Sorry. I don't speak maid."), according to Entertainment Weekly's lastest issue, she actually was addressing the viewers with: "I want to take this moment to thank our Latino audience for watching. And for those of you who can understand me but who are not Latino, I want to commend you for learning a second language."
3. Great news: Kiefer Sutherland talks about a possible "24" movie!
4. And, last, if only because these networks pulling it are practicing CENSORSHIP (kind of like the theatres that won't air "Brokeback Mountain"), please watch "Book of Daniel" so that it can become a huge hit! Need more convincing? Read this.

I am not ignoring the obvious | December 29, 2005
In case everyone is starting to think I am a bad TV goddess for not yet mentioning midseason replacements, just wait. That is what my column this week is about and it's detailed and long and maybe a little bit bossy. In other words, it will be exactly the guide you need to make it through the midseason without dying from TV overload or without missing the good shows (it would be easy to do).
I will give you a teaser, though, by telling you that, despite the controversy, The Book of Daniel is the midseason's (and probably the season's) best new drama.
I wanted to warn everyone, though, that because my column is written for Alaska time, you can assume that in your time zone everything I talk about will air an hour later than what I write in my column (if it's on this site, I will use the regular airings, but for the column, it's obviously Alaska time only!) except for UPN. Don't ask me why, but UPN shows air at the same time in Alaska as everywhere else.
If you are dying to know about the midseason shows, though, and cannot wait until my column publishes on Friday, you can read about the offerings from other writers here or here (you might have to scroll until you find the Dec. 2 entry) or here. I will warn you, though, to read those at your own risk. They may or may not agree with my own take and therefore they may or may not lead you astray (which I, of course, never would do).

Time to be counted | December 19, 2005
If you have TiVo or any other DVR, Nielsen will start counting you next week (I think). It's not completely clear to me whether all people with DVRs will be counted in the ratings, or only those who already are Nielsen households. I'm hoping it's all, because I have TWO dual-tuner TiVos (yes, I am insane) and I would like them to count for something.

What is wrong with the world? | December 13, 2005
Why is no one watching "Arrested Development," even now that it might be canceled? I thought for sure people would tune in, but even "7th Heaven" beat it last night.
In good news, however, Jason Bateman (and ostriches) will guest star on "Scrubs." It's a "trade" for Zach Braff's hilarious guest spot on "Arrested Development" last season.
