News, views and reviews | May 25, 2007

For anyone actually online leading into the long weekend, I wrote up a random post about a little of everything TV-related: news, what to watch, what to probably not watch, people who are nuts... Read and enjoy, because that's all you're getting from me for at least a few days.

Schedule changes | October 10, 2006

Thank you, Matt Roush, for doing what I have been too lazy to get around to. If you are wondering where your favorite show has moved to, TV Guide's Roush tracks all of the schedule changes here.

In related news, CBS's early cancellation of Smith might mean they air their new medical drama 3 Lbs sooner than expected. Really, we need more medical shows, don't we? That's exactly what I was thinking.

Speaking of medical shows, though, Scrubs season 4 is on DVD today. Buy it.

Important television | September 27, 2006

No, that isn't an oxymoron. Discovery Times and the brave Renaud brothers finally are bringing the amazing, inspirational, educational Off to War to DVD. And this is a set you should buy immediately, even if you haven't seen it.

I promise you that you will learn something about the Iraq war that you didn't know before. I can even promise that this 10-episode set will alter your perspective, at least in some small way.

Doubt me? Watch the trailer. No, really. Do it now. Here:

Now go preorder the set (you can also buy through Amazon. That link is in my sidebar). You won't be sorry.

Waiting for DVD | August 08, 2006

So, one of my most favorite people, Isabel (I love her even though she has admitted to not watching Big Brother), asked a very interesting question in the comments recently. She wanted to know what I think about those "viewers" who don't watch TV shows until they're on DVD. She uses the example of Arrested Development as a show that so many people waited to watch on DVD -- and we all know its fate, of course.

My answer has two parts:

1. I can't blame people for wanting to watch a show with so much continuity, such as Arrested Development or Veronica Mars or even Lost, on DVD. After all, then you don't have to wait for a week (or often longer) to see the next episode. So, I understand it. I have thoroughly enjoyed many shows that I first started watching on DVD (examples: Farscape, Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, The Shield). On the other hand...

2. I do believe that as a fan of a show such as Arrested Development, you have an obligation to watch it on TV and to pressure as many people as possible into also watching it on TV. When a show is critically acclaimed and adored by its fans but can't muster up 5 million viewers a week, there's something wrong. That something wrong is people who complain that a show is about to get canceled when those very same people have never watched an actual episode on TV. It angers me. Grrrr.

So, I guess, to sum up, if you want to wait until it's out on DVD, I don't want to hear you complain about its cancellation. I wish Farscape and Freaks & Geeks hadn't been canceled, but I didn't watch them yet, so I don't complain about those rat bastards who canceled them -- or even worse, stupid viewers who didn't watch -- because I didn't watch either! Everwood, Firefly and Arrested Development on the other hand? I will yell at you all for YEARS, and call the studio executives idiots for the rest of my life! Hey, I earned that right. Right?!

Merry Christmas! | December 21, 2005

I'll be back soon (probably even before Christmas), but in the meantime, buy yourself or your loved ones something very wonderful for Christmas!

(Oh, and I have a secret about that limited edition "Friends" set, which appears to be sold out already anyway; it's just the regular 10 sets in a fancy collector's box, which there is a coupon for in the 10th season set. SO, if you already bought all 10 and want the box, you should be able to get it with the coupon for $20!)
